Sex after birth

Hi ladies this maybe a TMI but I've been so horny since giving birth *monday will be a week.* I know the doctors recommendations but I think I may have a difficult time adhering to that. I was wondering have any of you ladies had sex since giving birth? Do you plan on waiting the 4-6 weeks? For you STM+ did you ladies wait if not how long soon after delivery did you have sex?

Dr gave me the go ahead at my six week check up after my last two. But honestly I was soooo sore we couldn't. I wasn't able to have sex until like 10 weeks postpartum. It seriously just HURT before then. And even at 10 weeks it was still pretty uncomfortable.

  • There's a reason why they tell you 6 weeks, including risk for infection. If it's THAT big of a deal, call your OB and see what the earliest they recommend is.

  • Your cervix just pushed out a baby, it prob needs time to close and heal. It took about 4 months, maybe longer, after my first to really get into it again. I had stitches and hurt soooo much every time we tried. Poor hubby was so patient. It was another (maybe selfish) reason why I wanted to do a completely unmedicated birth, didn't need stitches this time, hopefully that means sex after 6 weeks.

This. There is a clear path directly to your healing uterus that just detached a placenta. The risk for serious infection is high.

In addition to the science as to why we wait, even though my libido was high after my first it was just painful from breastfeeding and took months before it didn't hurt. Do oral, cuddle etc, but piv wait at least 4-6 weeks to make sure you're fully healed.
  • I've read there isn't a whole lot of science behind the 6 weeks rule - it's kind of a random time-frame, mainly because that's when the majority of women are no longer bleeding by that point.  I know that there are plenty of health care providers that will give you the go-ahead when you're no longer bleeding and feel up to it.  But a week is definitely WAY too soon.

  • Ugh, this makes me cringe. My vag is off limits for AT LEAST 6 weeks. I also agree with others that there's a reason they give you a time frame and I just cant fathom why anyone would want to go against that and risk potential health issues. With my 1st I got the ok at 6 weeks but I think I waited at least 10 weeks, I had no desire to get back into that and breastfeeding really didn't help.

OP, I dont remember but did you have a c-section? Please say yes because I'll be a week post partum tuesday and um ouch!!
  • @lilqt3929 I did have a c-section

Ditto all this. There is no way I would have wanted to at one week PP. I would stick with other forms of intimacy if I were you.

Ok, that makes a little bit more sense. I don't know what c-section recovery is like but I'd check with your OB for some advice.

Doctors suggest to wait to eliminate infections and irritation. Call your doctor or wait.
    I suggest waiting

My cs recovery booklet says to wait 6 weeks
  • Just no. I'm almost 3 weeks out from the emergency c section and just lost my last steri-strip. The area is still painful, stomach tender and there is still light bleeding. Kinda wanted to puke reading this post honestly lol love my DH and I'm super thankful he respects the shop is closed another 3-5 weeks.
  • I literally gasped when I read this post! I'm 2 days out from birth and having to wipe makes me want to cry, let alone my husband being down there. Eek! I can't even think about it!  :s

  • Haha omg! A week? I can't even imagine thinking about sex a week into post partum life. Not to mention infection and just giving your body a break, pregnancy is extremely risky this close to giving birth. Your uterus needs to heal. I would def wait a few weeks. And of course use birth control no matter what. I wasn't ready for sex for 3-4 months for both of my previous deliveries and I had csections!

  • @seckenrode Lol I def hope not! I'm not swollen the bleeding has stopped all around I feel better not like I had a csection. I went to the doctor today I wasn't cleared for sex but she said 4 weeks to be on the safe side.

You may not be done bleeding though, that's why they recommend 6 weeks. I stopped bleeding by one week, had 4 days of no bleeding and then it came back full force with clots and all. 4 weeks isn't a bad time frame if you really want sex that badly.

  • I'll admit I feel amazing (8 days pp). I feel good and have no pain after I gave birth to my little guy (fourth baby). I've not once not wanted to have sex but I'll be waiting a little longer. I don't want to rush anything. My husband was deployed when we had our first but we did have intercourse 4 weeks pp after our second and 2 weeks pp after our third. There was no pain just pressure and it was very tight (tmi). All vaginal births. But it's honestly up to you and how you feel. Of course it's always best to listen to your ob and wait the 6 weeks.
  • I am STM with my first I only waited 4 weeks. I did not have stitches and truly did not have pain with intercourse. I stopped bleeding 2 weeks after giving birth. I remember being super nervous to tell my doctor at my 6 week appt that we had had sex and she just said listen to your body 4 weeks was just fine as long as I had stopped bleeding. @kinnonam
  • I'm sure someone has mentioned this already, but most women are crazy fertile in the first few months after giving birth so be careful! I live in the land of "Irish twins" and that shizz is no joke.
  • March mom lurker here. My friend said she was super horny after her first child and when she went for her pp check up, she was pregnant again! She was almost 9 months pregnant at her son's first birthday party. *shudder*
  • Whenever you do finally have sex, i recommend having lots of your favorite lube on hand. The hormones can make things very dry (regardless of birth method) which leads to chafing and pain.
