vomiting after nursing

I was breastfeeding LO and took him off to burp and he vomited everything out. This isn't the first time and I know that it's relatively normal for it to happen but it scares the crap outta me. Especially since he wants to feed again shortly after.

Re: vomiting after nursing

  • My LO also had this problem a few times. Usually it was because he took in too much too fast and had some air bubbles that forced it all back up. I started to unlatch him about halfway through a feeding to burp him and we haven't had it happen again.

  • Same here. What I've done that I've noticed helping is shortening her feeds so she doesn't over do it (which my pediatrician suggested too), and I feed her in more of an upright position. I sit cross legged with one arm under her keeping her belly towards me and rest her bum on my legs I even use the boppy under my legs to help prop my legs up higher to get her closer. I would have to say that's helped a ton for us.
  • My son did this for the first time last night! Scared me half to death. We called his doctor's nurse hotline, and they also said to burp him halfway through. I felt terrible since it was the middle of the night and I was just trying to get milk down his gullet and get back to sleep. Turns out I can't rush him so much!
  • My first baby did this all the time. I had a super fast milk flow and he was getting too much too quickly. In the beginning it happened at least half of the time and it was at least six weeks before he didn't do it as often. Luckily, this little one doesn't have that problem. It's slightly scary (and messy) but you get used to it.
  • Little man has always spit up a lot since birth. so I finally asked my nurse about this. She said breast fed babies spit up more than formula fed babies. She also said little boys tend to throw up more than girls, because something inside is more sensitive? I can't remember the technical name for it.
She said if baby is gaining weight than she doesn't worry about it and throwing up would slow down around 3-4 months. and until then to just keep some extra burp rags handy when feeding/burping him.
  • Urgh. Dealing with this now. It just started this week (week 3). Nurse says its normal but it seems like just so much!!!
    glad to read it's common.
