Hip dysplasia / Pavlik Harness

hi ladies. FTM. Just had my 6 week old daughters follow up ultrasound after they heard a click in her left hip. Ultrasound found her left hip is dislocated. Preparing for appt w orthopedic surgeon on Monday.

Any by other moms going through this? I'm trying to be positive but I'm terrified and extremely upset. The radiologist said she could likely wear the Pavlik harness. Looking for anyone with experience in this as well as prayers.

  • My little sister (27 years younger than me) had to wear one. It never bothered her or us (I lived with them) because she was still so young. It really didn't seem to phase anyone within a few days!
  • Thank you both!
  • They suspected hip dysplasia in my baby too because she had been breech my whole pregnancy. We had our ultrasound and luckily she does not have it, but I did a lot of research while waiting for results and was definitely put at ease with what I found. It's great that they found it early as it's easily fixed as babies! The harness doesn't seem to bother babies too much either, I watched a YouTube video of how they put it on and it looked much comfier than I had pictured. So while we were fortunate to not have to go that route, I can sympathize. Don't let it get you down there are definitely worse things out there and it will soon be fixed and be a distant memory!
  • Hi, first time post for me. I had just read them all through my pregnancy until now. I felt a personal connection and know you are probably stressed. Wanted to give you some relief.

I worried about this with my daughter, but so far no signs. It runs in my family, so my pediatrician is constantly looking for it. My mom and sister had this. My sister wore the leg brace for a few years. Then she would have to wear her shoes on opposite feet. People constantly told her they were on the wrong feet and tried to fix her shoes. I had to tell them they were wrong and she had to because of her hips. However, that was all both my mom and sister had to do. No major surgeries or anything stressful. Just check-ups and the brace for their legs. I know it is hard and stressful, but don't stress too much about it. I say too much because we are moms... We will always stress. Let us know what your ortho says. Good luck!
  • Yes, my daughter who is 9 weeks old has had the Pavlik Harness since she was 5 weeks. The orthopedic specialist says it doesn't hurt your child, just mama's heart, and she sure has that right! But I keep reminding myself it's only temporary. It does make changing diapers more difficult and clean up after blow outs and spit up.  The first week I wasn't allowed to remove it at all and  I am now allowed to remove it every 4 days for a bath and to change clothes (and get some much missed skin to skin time). I bought baby leg warmers since she can't wear pants with the harness, just a onesie and socks.
  • @Hawks12 did she adjust to the harness pretty well? We are on day 2.
  • Yes. She really doesn't seem to have any issues wearing it all. It was basically just me that needed to get used to it.
