Moms of food allergy babies

talk to me ladies. My son has pretty significant dairy protein intolerance- throw up, bad gas and full body painful eczema happen whenever i have any dairy. This includes baked goods, sauces and chocolate :-( all of this food elimination has caused my supply to dip because I can't eat so many things. We are also finding out he's allergic to soy. Going to try supplementing with either alumentum or whatever the enfamil brand is- Neoproxin or something? I can't remember the name I'm tired haha. Have any of you tried this? How did you keep up your milk supply? And finally, who feels pretty exhausted from the strict diet and breastfeeding?

Re: Moms of food allergy babies

  • My LO hates the special formula for her protein allergy. Thankfully I have a freezer stash of breast milk so if I don't pump quite enough one day, I can dip into that. I have also been taking the Mother Milk boost from the Honest Company. It has fenugreek in it. Hang in there!  Try to get extra pumps in when you can to get a freezer stash.

  • Let me tell you my story because this exact topic has dominated our lives since LO was born. Her body erupted in rashes and she always had gas or poo issues it seemed. We saw four different doctors, including a pediatric gastroenterologist and pediatric allergist. I was told it was a dairy protein allergy by her pediatrician right from the get-go. So I immediately cut out all dairy. Rashes continued. Then a 2nd pediatrican said I should give up soy, gluten, eggs, nuts, and fish (and dairy still). So I was left with eating NOTHING. My weight dropped drastically low. I was miserable. My DH felt helpless. And stilllllll, the rashes continued. That's when I saw the pediatric allergist, who unlike ALL the previous doctors, actually tested LO for everything. GET THIS: Only .5% of infants have an actual allergy to something in their mothers milk from a food they eat - RARE. Well, lo and behold, they tested her for everything and guess what?! She isn't allergic to any food!!! So I had STARVED myself for months for no damn reason! She tested positive for allergic reaction to dog saliva - we have two dogs always by her and trying to lick her - we had no idea THIS is what she was allergic to instead of all the damn food I gave up!!! They diagnosed her with eczema and explained the dog saliva simply exacerbates it (but does not cause it). They put me on a simple skin care regimen I do twice a day and boom, her skin looks amazing for the first time. And now I eat whatever I want and she's totally fine. And the poo issue (green mucousy with random blood streaks) - they found she had freaking C-Diff!!! We have no clue how she got that. But they treated it w/ antibiotics and all is perfect now. We spent months blaming food allergies only to learn it was all false and quite rare anyways... When we should have been treating her eczema and restricting her interactions w/ our dogs. Just wanted to share my experience and see if you've had her actually tested for the food allergies? Also, I completely sympathize w/ you on the diet because I was MISERABLE and cranky and depressed in it - I adore food and I love eating out, so it really stressed my husband and I out to miss events and dinners bc I couldn't eat there. One allergy appointment changed everything!!!!
  • I just went through something similar! For months, the pediatrician had been suggesting dairy/soy so insisted I try cutting out of my diet. Luckily my LO has always gained well and is on the high side for percentiles. But gas, bloating, fussiness, eczema, mucousy stool, etc. We finally went to a pediatric allergist who tested him (skin) and it turns out the only reaction was for peanuts! I have had an apple with peanut butter and a protein shake with peanut butter every single day since his birth!!!!!! The allergist suggested I eliminate the peanut butter until he starts solids, then pointed me to a recent New England Journal of Medicine paper about infant allergies, and how we should introduce him to peanuts in baked goods when solids are started. Apparently many infants outgrow the sensitivity. We are not at solids yet (not even 5 months old yet) but I am relieved to know the culprit. It never affected my supply (the elimination diets) but I would suggest seeing an allergist - pediatricians do not always know so they tell you to cut everything out which is not always feasible. Hang in there! This stuff can be tricky!
  • How interesting ladies! I may have to take him to an allergist if things don't get better.

Omg! I'm so glad you shared that. Everything you mentioned are also symptoms of my son. I'm going to have him allergy tested. I wonder if he's not allergic to milk like I've been told. They never actually tested they just had us do soy. He tolerates soy well but maybe it's all b.s. and he could be drinking milk!
