1st Trimester

foil/highlights in hair

I've read and heard so many different things about coloring your hair in the 1st Trimester.  What are your thoughts or what do you know about the safety of getting highlights/low lights using foils?

I'm sorry if this is an old question but my bump search showed no results....I'm sure it's not working.  This seems like a dumb thing to call the OB for but I may have to.  My appt is on the 24th and I'll only be 7 weeks by thn.

Re: foil/highlights in hair

  • Its an OWT.  I colored my hair once I got to my 2nd tri;  my hairstylist and my OB said it's safe--and DD is happy and healthy.  I'd wiat until your 2nd tri

  • I was reading the book "What to expect when you're expecting" and it says that most experts say to wait until you are in your 2nd trimester.. High lights might be ok since the bleach is not place on your scalp.. I would definately ask your OB.
  • Thanks!  I may try to call them Monday.  Even so, waiting until 2nd Trimester won't be too bad....and totally worth the peace of mind.

  • I have been getting my hair highlighted the whole time, my OB was never concerned about it
  • My OB said there was no proven study to say there were affects, but she recommended I wait until second tri...

This is the same as what I was told.  "In the end, you don't want to have any questions about what you could've done differently" is what they said.

  • One of the first things my doctor told me at my first appointment was "You can still color your hair!" ?They even put it on the stupid video they make us watch. ?I got mine colored at 11 weeks (highlights/foil).

  • I just got my hair highlighted (with foils) my hairstylist was careful to make sure the color didn't touch my scalp.  I am 10 weeks.
  • If you have a good stylist some of the chemical does get on the scalp because you dont want to look like you have roots when you get a fresh hilite done. I am a stylist and I know I make sure to get down to the scalp. I also have not colored my hair since I was about 4 w and still didnt know I was pregnant so I am waiting until the 2nd tri just because I know how harsh hair color is. if you need any more info just ask me !
  • Im not going to say its safe or not safe during the first tri only you can choose that....  HOWEVER as a hair stylist I would NOT get my hair colored during the first trimester because due to the hormones in our bodies during pregnancy you can never tell how the chemical reactions will take.. and it may leave you with blue orange red green hair... and it will be very hard to correct it due to once again HORMONES! just my take as a cosmotologist
  • oh yes good point I forgot about the carzyness that happens sometimes and your like what the heck lol. I am personally waiting as well. i once had someone get very hot roots on a normal 1 process color that she normally gets I told or well if you have your period or whatever sometimes that plays a factor blah blah 3 weeks later she came in and told me she was pregnant lol.
  • I've read conflicting opinions about if and when it's safe. I'm not going to do it at all. It isn't worth the potential risk.

  • I held out as long as I could in first tri but ended up getting it done at 8 weeks.  Which reminds me I need to call my hairdresser!
  • Thanks for all of your input ladies...especially you stylists.

I will probably just wait....there's no sense giving myself something (new) to worry about.

     Thanks again!

  • I asked my doctor at my first appointment and she said to wait until I was out of the first trimester.
  • My hairstylist says it's safe to do highlights anytime but I'm going to wait until the 2nd tri. I think overall color is not safe b/c it touches your scalp but highlights don't.

  • My OB said it was perfectly fine to color your hair whenever. I had highlights at 8w and my color turned out fine and my baby is still fine! I guess it's just personal opinion on when/if you get it done.
