Has everyone had their first UA?

I had my first OB appointment today and we went through all my past medical history, family history, took vitals and labs, etc. I'm kind of bummed though, they didn't perform an ultra sound! I'm 8 weeks exactly. She said I'll get my first UA at 10 weeks. Anybody else do it this way? I see some ladies have UA's at 6 weeks even!

Re: Has everyone had their first UA?

  • This is my 4th pregnancy but 1st one that I have had an u/s before 20 weeks.

  • I haven't.  My first u/s is tomorrow, at 7w4d.  I won't get another one until 12 or 13 weeks, when I have the NT scan.

  • Different OBs have different practices. Mine does the first one at your first prenatal appointment around 8 weeks. Then, so long as it's a low risk pregnancy, you get the anatomy scan at 20 weeks and that's it.

  • I did at 7 weeks, but maybe earlier bc I am 35?

  • Mines not til 10 weeks. That's normal! Many OB offices do them between 10-12 weeks for your first one if you don't have a history of loss.
  • I had an early ultrasound (before 11 weeks) because of my past loss. I requested to be seen to have my pregnancy confirmed. My gynecology department did hcg level checks and an ultrasound to track growth. But this is not the norm, especially if you do not ask for it nor have had a past loss. The OB department would not see me nor anyone before 8 weeks and they do not do the first ultrasound until 10-12 weeks. This is Stanford Hospital with Stanford University in CA.
  • I had my first OB apt today as well, I am 10 weeks , and they still didn't do any testing. My first scan will be in 2 weeks for the IPS testing. Was hoping for at least a heartbeat check but since it is still so early she said she wouldn't try cause it can lead to more unnecessary stress if they can't find it yet. Oh well, 2 more weeks isn't so bad.... was just hoping for some proof that something is really in there !
  • 10 weeks isn't too long to wait.  Having had one, many early ultrasounds cause (and are caused by) more stress than they're worth.  At 6 weeks there is a good chance you don't see anything because it's just too early.  Hang in there mama!  Those 2 weeks will give baby more time to grow and you'll get a much better picture of babe.   :)

  • My clinic had a first time moms meeting last week and I learned that my doc doesn't do ultrasounds until week 20 unless you specifically request it. I made the call the next day to add it to my appointment. I'm going in tomorrow for my first u/s!! I'll be 9wks
  • Mine does them anywhere from 8-10, and mine is at 9w6d.

  • The practice I go to only does one at the 20 weeks-ish mark unless they deem one medically necessary. I have to go for one next week at 10weeks because they want to due a dating scan since my periods were so irregular.

  • I had my first U/S at six weeks, but it was a dating ultrasound - I could have been 10 weeks pregnant for all I knew. (And it's true that I didn't see much - just a dot; the midwife said she could see a heartbeat but I couldn't tell.)

I'm having another U/S in a few days (at 9+ weeks) to make sure all is progressing as normal, then I won't have one until the anatomy scan.

  • Do you have an ultrasound school near you? Where I live, there is a technical college that does free abdominal ultrasounds for pregnant mommas for 7+ weeks. They get addicting. I've been twice to make sure all was well since I'm high risk but my doctor still won't see me until 10 weeks.

  • I'm going to a midwife clinic and they don't see patients until 10 weeks and I have no idea yet when I'll have my first ultrasound. I hope I get to hear the heart beat at least, I need some confirmation!

  • I had my 1st US at about 6 1/2 weeks but it was only because of previous losses.  Before that, my OB sent me for blood work every 4-5 days to make sure my HCG kept rising/doubling.  I'll get another one at about 10 weeks, another at 12, and then I'm not sure what the game plan is.  Like pp said, just depends on your doctor!  I changed OB's after my last loss and this one is much more thorough and wants to give me piece of mind with multiple US.

  • Had my first appointment when i was 9+3 and will have udating ultrasound when i am 11+3. Last pregnancy i had first appt when i was 8+2 and ultrasound at 10+2
  • Had my first at my first appt only because my OB and I differed on my EDD.    By LMP I was 8 weeks, I figured I was closer to 6.5-7.   They wanted to confirm because I wanted the genetic testing.    Anyway, had an internal that day and noted I was 6 wks, 4 days.   :)   We needed to verify that so they knew when to schedule my next one (at 12 wks) for the testing.    If I had opted out of the testing, my first US wouldn't have been until 20 wks.
  • The practice I go to doesn't do them until 20 weeks unless there is a problem. I am so jealous of everyone!
  • I haven't had one yet either and I'm kind of jealous of all the ladies who get one early!  I forgot to ask if I get one at my 12 week appointment (pregnancy brain, anyone?) but they said I'd have a pelvic exam, so I'm thinking probably while they're down there they'll do a u/s.  I hope so.  I just keep reminding myself that the fatigue, sore boobs, blump, nausea, etc are signs that baby is doing well.
  • I haven't even had my first appointment yet!  My first one isn't until 12 weeks at this point.  She was booked up, but said she would take me on her lunch if I wanted to get in closer to the 9 week timeframe.  I declined because the only reason I would really need to get in earlier is if I was doing the first trimester screenings.  I declined them with my first two kids, so now I wait! :)  I'll get an ultrasound then and then won't get another until the anatomy scan at 20 weeks.  Those will likely be my only two unless something happens where another is warranted.
  • I had an in-office TV U/S at 8 weeks but it was one of those super old machines that looks like a Rorshach test. I will get my first clear one at the NT scan at 12/13 weeks. I think even that wait seems forever long... the first tri is the worst tri :p
  • I had one at my first appointment 7w1d. I had read all of the information my practice put on their website. They had said they didn't do an ultrasound until 20 weeks. But I got a "surprise" dating ultrasound at my first appointment. I'll have another one, the anatomy scan at 20 weeks, then one again at 36 weeks to see the position of baby.

  • I had my first at 6w0d then another at 7w5d and we heard the heartbeat clear as day at this one.  I will have my next one at 10w with the free cell blood work to give us the sex. Then I have my first anatomy scan at 12 weeks with the high risk ob. I adore seeing my little one.  It gives me something concrete to bond with already.
  • I had my first U/S this past week at 9 weeks, though they assumed I was eight weeks when I called. The more traditional and old fashioned practices tend to make you wait longer. My doctor said it's usually because most problems would have worked themselves out by then, and it also gives baby time to get big enough to see movement and heart beat and such. I'm with you though- I wanted to see the little one the moment I got the BFP!

  • Because of 2 previous losses my HCG and progesterone was monitored for about a week and then I had a 6 week US, an 8 week US, and a 9 week US (the 9 week one was at my request because that's when I had my last miscarriage). My next US is at 10 weeks on Monday and then I'll have another at 11w3d for my genetic testing. I'll probably have one more at my 12 week appt too.

  • I tried to talk my OB into an early ultrasound because I'm neurotic, but he only acquiesced to the blood work and wants me to wait until our appointment in 2/22, roughly 8 weeks. My HCG is on track for where I was at this stage with DS. I have no idea how frequently I'll be getting ultrasounds this pregnancy because I'm now AMA at 35, will be 36 at delivery. I was 34 with DS and had a healthy pregnancy.

  • Had my first ultrasound at 8 weeks last week....my doctor wheeled her little U S cart into the room and preformed it right there, it was such a relief to hear that heartbeat and see our  little baby in there! I know the wait for it is sooooo hard but hang in there!
  • My doctor does a dating scan at the 8 week appointment, a 12 week scan and a 20 week scan. To those whose doctors don't offer a scan until 20 weeks, don't you get nervous your dating is off? I ovulate late and was 2 1/2 weeks behind at my dating scan with DS and about 6 days with this bean. I would have been 17 weeks at my anatomy scan with DS if I hadn't been dated :)
  • I won't have one until 18-20 weeks.
  • My first ultrasound is on March 1, I'll be 10 weeks.  The only other ultrasound will be at 20 weeks, if I'm lucky.  I had a MMS in October so I'm very anxious to hear a heartbeat. That being said, I am having extreme fatigue, nausea, and breast tenderness so I am assuming all is progressing in schedule.
