Low HCG levels and Progesterone Supplements

okay ladies, need some advice. I'm 5w4d. My HCG levels last Friday were 1200. Monday they were 1800, and yesterday they were only 2100. My dr is disappointed they aren't rising as quick as they should be, which makes me worried. Should I be worried? Can I still have a safe pregnancy with low HCG levels? I asked about progesterone supplements but my dr wasn't really informative about it because she said there's no real evidence that they work. I ended up buying the prog suppositories and started last night. Will this even help me with my HCG levels? I've had 2 prior miscarriages so I'm just paranoid about everything. Advice please!

Re: Low HCG levels and Progesterone Supplements

  • With miscarriages in your past, I would feel they should be monitoring your progesterone. I might find a new OB.
My daughter didn't quite double with her hcg levels, and she's here, happy and healthy. Yours are increasing at least. That's a good sign.

  • Doctors will prescribe progesterone supplements if your progesterone is low, but yes, there isn't a lot of evidence that they help. Did she check your progesterone level, do you know if it's low?

I've always had great progesterone levels but I've still had low hcg in the past. So I don't think one causes the other. Sorry you have to go through this. As much as they tell us not to worry too much over our hcg numbers, it's impossible not to. Praying everything works out ok.

  • Every time I get blood work she has never commented on my progesterone levels. The focus has always been on my HCG levels. I didn't go through all this blood work during my first pregnancy. At that time I didn't have my first us until 11 weeks and that's where I found out it stopped developing at 6 weeks. The 2nd miscarriage I found out I was pregnant and then lost it 2 days later. This 3rd time she's having me get blood work done and the discussion has been the HCG levels. My friend told me about prog supplements but my dr didn't seem to support it too much. I'm basically just trying them out of suggestions from my friend.
  • My doc usually only checks my progesterone once to make sure it's good and then focuses on hcg. If your OB really doesn't believe progesterone supplements help, she may not have bothered. I would find a new OB. There's not a lot of evidence to support that they help, but I wouldn't stay with a doctor that I didn't feel was at least trying everything possible. My doc thinks they're pretty useless, but she'll still prescribe them to patients with low progesterone. She'd rather do something than nothing.
