Crap-tastic Doctor Rant

So. I have a UTI. It hurts. It is not good for me or baby. However, I know that all I need is a safe antibiotic and some cranberry pills/a probiotic. I really thought this would be an easy fix and not something for me to worry about. Turns out, if you go to Doctors Care because your RE is an hour away and is closed now, simple is not what you should expect.

This doctor offered me 3 different class/category C and D drugs to take, that he found from googling on drugs.com. Even I know, it should be a class B drug at worst. Once I told him I didn't want any of those drugs, he said hold on "I'll go ask another doctor. " Came back in with another antibiotic and said we need to do a urine culture to make sure that I don't have a certain kind of bacteria that is going to make me need an emergency abortion. WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF. I promptly left.

Why is is it so hard to be a doctor? Why does a doctor think he knows enough about what may cause something as horrid as that but NOT anything about a simple antibiotic? I go to the minute clinic, they don't treat pregnant women. Bring on the cranberry and water until I can get in to my real doctor. This is also my #whymypregnantselfiscrying post, but I didn't want to repost on 3 threads. Not to mention, I just want a sticky baby and all this feels like so much at one time. I'm breathing now, but I wasn't then. *rant over*

Re: Crap-tastic Doctor Rant

  • Sorry you had to go through with that. They probably shouldn't have agreed to see you in the first place if they were not specialists. Not all doctors are created equally, unfortunately. Do you not have any OBs in your area that you can see? As much as I would hate using the ER in this way (the wait + not using it as it is intended), maybe the ER would be a better choice because they do see pregnant women and are better equipped than a primary care clinic that only sees "regular" types of complaints.

    Hope you feel better soon!

WORF: I did not come here to admire the scenery.
DAX: If you say so. I guess we should just go home.
WORF: Well maybe. I would not be so hasty.
DAX: I take it the scenery has improved?
WORF: A few months ago, when I was commanding the Defiant on a scouting mission in the Gamma Quadrant, we encountered a protostar cluster, a swirling mass of colour set against a background of glowing clouds and burning sky. It was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen, until now.
DAX: I've got to take you on vacation more often.

  • Unfortunately I don't have an OB yet because I'm still with the RE, and with it being a Friday night, I would be better off waiting until my RE appointment on Monday. If it gets worse or doesn't get better at all after some cranberry pills and water/sleep, I will take advantage of the ER. I just couldn't believe what I was hearing. He even asked me if I had a fever and if my blood pressure was okay...... Isn't that what the nurse taking my vitals is for? Oh my. Talk about waterworks. thank you though! I just had to rant and nowhere better to do that than here.

Thank you so much @SnobunnieMel - I ended up being prescribed Cephalexin (also class B), my aunt was prescribed that in all of her pregnancies as well. Okay reviews on that? I was just happy it was class B and listed as "ok" on all of the pregnancy websites. Pharmacist thumbed upped it too.
  • So glad you got this resolved! I can understand why that sent you over the crying edge.
  • Boo that Doctor.
