Eye color

so I know it's iffy right now l, and up to a year, but just wondering if any of your LOs eyes have started changing from blue yet? Or if they weren't blue. DDs are blue and seem like they've lightened some (which I read doesn't happen) but anyway. I am hoping for green like DH but mine are brown and she seems to have gotten my dark hair and skin so I bet they end up brown but just wondering about everyone else? People seem shocked when they see her and say "her eyes are still blue?!" But yes I've read it can take a year for them to end up the color they are so I'm not counting my chickens yet. Just curious.

Re: Eye color

  • Olive's were kind of a blue black. Now they're very dark brown. I'm excited about this. I have green eyes. I have always envied dark chocolate brown eyes. I wish i had that colour eye. My husband does and so does Olive.

My LOs eyes are brown. My SO is Hispanic and I'm mixed but my skin is on the lighter side and I have blue eyes. His eyes are brown so his features dominate.

Same, I have green and DH has brown. I've always wanted brown and I think my DD got her daddy's eyes because they are super dark.
  • Wow really? This is interesting. I am also Hispanic so dark brown eyes! But I have always envied light color eyes. So maybe Lyncoln will have lighter eyes. Her step sibs are both blue but that came from their mom so I'd be shocked if they stay blue.
  • My mom says mine stayed deep blue for the first year but are now deep brown. DS has his dad's bright blue eyes and blonde hair (not my dark brown. DD got my dark hair but her eyes are lightening. They've gone from slate grey to kind of a forest green which is what her brother's did early on.

Both mine and my husbands eyes are brown but mine are golden brown. DD's eyes are still dark blue but are turning a bit greenish brown. I have some Irish in me and I have dark red/brown hair, and she's got this light brown hair with a red tint in the sun so I hope she gets lighter eyes by some miracle!! BUT she is Hispanic and Arab. So chances are 110% brown lol I've always HATED my brown eyes, always wanted dark hair with green eyes. I envy you gals who have that!!
  • My sons eyes look light brown but outside a greyish blue. My eyes are dark brown and the bio fathers are blue. I'm thinking if they were going to be blue it would be obvious by now therefore will darken with time. I have no idea about green.

My eyes were dark blue for about a year too. And my hair was red. My eyes lightened to a sort of army green and the only blue left is a ring around the outside. My hair turned jasper, then dark brown.

Seriously pissed at whatever forces took my red hair and blue eyes away.

Funny. I envy dark brown eyes. My green eyes aren't bright emerald green. They're more of a pea soup, army green. Boo-urns..
  • @groovylocks I'm serious hoping she gets my dad's eyes. He had the vivid emerald green (they've faded with age). Also hoping she gets her dad's crazy long eyelashes. Coupled with those dimples she has going on...
  • My little guy has deep blue eyes. They are starting to lighten up!! I just love them!  My husband and I both have bright blue eyes! So I kind of figured my little guy would have blue eyes!
  • I've always been fascinated with the genetics behind eye color.  Hubs has green eyes and I have blue so our children could have potentially had any eye color.  Eye color is also not set at 1yr old - many people's eyes change color until they are three, four or five.  Kid #1 has grey eyes which can appear to be brilliant sapphire blue or stormy depending on what she is wearing and her mood.  Kid #2 has blue jean colored eyes and Little Man's eyes started off hazel, went green for a bit and are now blue-green.

To those of you with dark eyes wishing their children's eyes stay blue: totally possible assuming there is at least one blue eyed person in your direct family line (meaning biological parent or grand/great grands) and your husband has blue eyes or again has someone in direct line that also has blue.
  • DD still has blue eyes. DH has blue eyes, his mom and dad have blue eyes. I have green eyes, my dad has green eyes and my mom has blue eyes. My sister also ended up with green eyes, but her son has blue eyes. I don't think anyone in my family has brown eyes!
  • My boy has had dark brown eyes from day one. Both mine and my husband's are hazel.

DS had dark blue when he was born and they've lightened up to a more steel blue, I have blue as well as both my parents and brother, husband has brown and my in-laws are all brown/hazelish I'm so curious what DS eye's will be. His hair is a golden blonde that looks red at times, I'm also curious if he's going to stay a Blondie or darken up. My MIL seems to think DS only has her family's genes so,she's convinced its going to darken like both of her sons did lol, in my family my dad and I are the only brunettes lots of blondes on my side, so it could go either way I suppose.

(Edited because I'm tired and said "his" in-laws instead of "my" in-laws)
  • My DS has blue eyes still! The exact same shade as mine. Both my parents are blue and my DH's parents are brown and green. He is Hispanic so I'm surprised my DS's eyes are so blue! Hoping they stay. He has slightly tanned skin and lots of dark hair so blue eyes would be beautiful! He has his daddy's super long and thick eyelashes too!
  • When it comes to eye color, I think it has to do with the males genes. Usually the mother or father. It seems to be that way to me at least. My mom is mixed with English, German etc and my father German, Native American, Cuban and African American. So my sister had brown hair hair, brown eyes, I have brown hair blue eyes and my younger sis has blonde hair blue eyes. If my SOs family mbr had light eyes, I think my sons would've too.
  • Eye color is based on genes from both sides of the family. Brown is the most dominant eye color, then green, and blue is recessive. This means that if LO gets a brown gene from one side and green from the other, LO will have brown eyes.

DD still has blue eyes, but I have brown and DH has green. However my mom has green, so there's a chance DD could have green eyes (because I could have a green recessive gene).

Genetic stuff is one of the only thing I remember from college biology. :)
  • My lo was born with really dark blue and at 11 weeks they are really bright blue. I think you can usually tell what colour they will be in terms of blue or brown, but they do change over the course of the year .but usually as in blue eyes will go brighter etc.anybody know about hair colour? Im a nautral blonde oh is a dark red/brown lo's hair seems to be red around the back and sides but white on the top? He's going for the reverse ombre at the miniute. His eyebrows and eyelashes are white! Does hair colour change
  • DH has hazel eyes, and mine are blue-green. Our oldest daughter has sky-blue eye; middle daughter has ocean-blue; our 10 week old has gray right now, but I am hoping they change to her daddy's. Since my children have started out and stayed blue, I guess I have no iDea about when they change.

I was born with thick black hair. Around a year it was strawberry blonde, it continued to lighten to close to platinum blonde and the reversed. I now have a blonde/brown color.
  • @holly1811 DS's changed. It started sort of loght to medium brown and turned golden blonde. It has gotten slightly darker as it's gotten thicker but still very blonde. However his eyelashes have stayed very dark (blonde root but the rest is nearly black).

It was obvious his was changing within the first couple months. Any new hair growth he had after birth it came in blonde and eventually all the brown fell out.
  • My LO was born with dark eyes like almost black and now they are like an olive green. My eyes are like a hazel but on the browner side and DH has dark blue eyes. I was hoping for blue but green would be really nice too. LO has mile long eyelashes and huge dimples so it would be cute.

  • DD's eyes are a really lovely slate/blue color right now. Doubtful they'll stay but I love looking at them! My eyes are dark brown, almost black, and DH has light blue. Oh, and DD is a straight up ginger! (my mother is the only one on both sides of the family with red hair so that was a bit of a shock!) I've read that red hair and blue eyes is the most rare combo there is so I assume her eyes will change. This stuff is all so interesting to me...
  • I have hazel green eyes and DH has almost black eyes. DD had dark grey eyes when she was born but now they are light brown. Nico currently has light grey, hoping they turn into my hazel/green.
  • DS eyes have already changed to dark brown which isn't surprising since DH and I both have brown eyes. But our older daughter has grey/hazel eyes. But both of her grandfathers have blue but it was still surprising.

  • I thought this was a good chart. I have super light brown eyes.. Almost a honey brown. But my ex has blue...my sons eyes go from a blue gray to blue (just like my brother) so I think it's safe to say they are sticking to it.
  • I have green and SO has deep brown. Henry's eyes were almost black when he was born, turned brown and now they are getting lighter. They almost look dark green.
My dad has dark brown eyes, my mom has blue and only 2 of their 8 kids ended up with brown eyes. The rest of us have green and blue so it could still go either way for Henry.
  • I have brown eyes and my hubby has green.  Our first has blue eyes and it's looking like #2 will also.  I LOVE genetics!!!  Though, I was hoping #2 would have hazel eyes so we would all be different.  :-).
  • Dh and I both have blue eyes and our son has blue- pretty sure they will stay :). Apparently 99%! I didn't know it was that high! Very interesting chart, @alysa03 .
  • Oh, and my brother has blue eyes, SIL has brown and their daughter has green. Guess she's rare ;)
  • I still remember the generic chart we learned in high school biology with the big B (brown) and little b (blue). Never learned how green fit in there and of course I married someone with green eyes ;)

My son was born with slate blue eyes and they stayed that way for a while but slowly changed to more greenish but now they are a very strange hazel/caramel color. I can't even describe them properly. He's almost 3 so they will probably stick. They do change more green or blue based on what he's wearing too.

My daughter was born with the dark blue eyes but they have really lightened up to a really pretty bright blue over the last couple weeks (she's 7 weeks now). I hope they stick! My FIL has blue eyes and my dad's grandmother did too, so it's possible :)
  • I have hazel, husband has blue, hers are blue so far
  • LO has Brown eyes, just like DH. DH is Chinese and I'm Caucasian (with blue eyes) so he definitely favors his daddy in the eye department.
  • I have dark brown eyes and DH has blue. I was definitely gunning for blue eyes. No dice. Although DD has beautiful light brown eyes. LO's look almost black for now, but so did DD's. I'm gonna guess hers will be light brown as well.
    Lilypie Third Birthday tickers

    Lilypie First Birthday tickers
  • Lily's eyes have been brown since day 1. I have brown eyes, DH has green, DS has blue.
  • DD had dark brown eyes for a while and they are lightening up now. I have brown/hazel eyes with a hint of orange. It really just depends. DH has brown/hazel eyes. My parents have hazel eyes and MIL has green blue eyes. Really hoping Zoe gets lighter eyes!!
