Time away from in home daycare

What is your daycare's maternity leave policy for your family after baby is born if you already have one currently in daycare? To save our toddlers spot in daycare, we can have 2 weeks payment free but have to pay for the following weeks in full if I keep her home with me on maternity leave.

Re: Time away from in home daycare

  • Can you drop her down to part time for the time you're on maternity leave?  I know my teacher friends have to send their kid one or two days a week over the summer to hold their spot for the fall. Would yours be open to something like that during your leave?

  • When we had our second, daycare suggested we bring our first child to daycare a couple days a week so he could stay in the routine etc. We still had to pay full price to keep the spot. It was nice having a couple days a week with just the new little one and myself.

  • We kept my daughter in daycare because we had to pay to hold her spot always.  DH was still working FT, so he just did her pick up/drop off so I could stay home and rest with the baby.

  • I plan on sending my son to daycare while i'm on mat leave.  he'll need to stick with his routine and I'll need time to nap if i've been up all night with the new baby.

I'm sure there will be days though where I'll decide to keep him home with me.
  • The day care we found the policy is with one month's notice, we have to pay one day a week to hold our spot.

  • I just asked the admissions director this today when I dropped off DS at school. Since the baby will be born at the end of August (that's when the school year starts) and I plan on having DS home with me while I'm on maternity leave, I asked her how that works since he probably won't start until January 2017. She explained that they just prorate it and charge me for the months he will be there. I have to make sure I pay the deposit though to hold his spot, it's $500.00

  • Our day care will hold our spot for a few months without charging us, but I definitely plan on keeping DD in day care while I'm on maternity leave.  There's no way I could manage her energy + a newborn all day everyday!

  • I haven't asked yet and although I know I'd love to have him home with me 2 days a week and we'd save some money, if this is our last baby, this baby deserves 1:1 time like our son had.  Plus he turns 3 when the baby is born and qualifies for real preschool and I'd hate to have him miss out (and I'm pushing to get him moved up a class because they've kept him behind with young kids since the toddler room and he'll need to get used to his new classmates for the next two years).

  • My daughter actually starts kindergarten the week that I'm due (my son is a year older, so he's already in school) but I had looked into it before TTC and they would've given us 2 weeks payment-free, but would have to pay the minimum 3 days/week to hold her spot beyond that. I agree with @Curls919 about seeing if they offer part time; it might be good for your little one to keep attending daycare part time anyway so that you can have some one-on-one time with the new baby (plus naps!) and your LO can get out of the house and play with friends rather than listen to a crying baby at home.

  • I don't have personal experience with this, but in-home daycare might be harder to negotiate because the tuition for each child's place goes directly to an individual's income (rather than a company), and the daycare provider might not be able to afford an open spot for a long time.

DS is at a daycare center, and we get two weeks of unpaid vacation days a year. Plus, DH and I are both teachers, so we can pay a deposit (one month's cost) and take the summer off, or we can drop DS to part time. They've been pretty flexible with us. When this baby arrives, we'll keep DS going at least part time so the baby gets some 1:1 time and DS gets socialization, academics, and playtime.
