Cold + pregnancy = suggestions needed!

Anyone else get a cold super early on in their pregnancy with body aches? I started coughing this morning when I got up but the body aches just slowly started creeping up on me while at work (nothing horrible, just that nagging underlying "not feeling well" blah the body gets).

Anyone have any suggestions on helping get this body blah/cold to go away? I don't want to take any medications (it's been 8 years but I remember with my first my OB was very much "If you can stay away from any medications your first trimester it's better") so that is what is stuck in my head.

  • I am just getting over a cold too and I used a neti pot, cold steam humidifier, lots of rest and fluids. And did I say rest? I slept like 18 hours Saturday.

  • Beginning of this week I had a 2 day fever, tickle in my throat, light cough, and blew my nose constantly whenever I wasn't going to bed almost immediately after work.  I took tylenol to keep my body temp down, plugged in the humidifier, drank lots of fluids and slept that cold off.

  • I have a cold right now. I took off work the last two days because it was so bad. Rest and lots of fluids is all I can say. It won't last forever!

^^ what they said You can get honey lozenegs for a sore throat, also I swear by hot water with honey and lemon. And steamy showers to help ease body aches!

    *edit for clarity
  • Thank you all! It came out of no where at work today and I ended up leaving early because I felt it was better I rest than push my body. I'll definitely take the hot shower to help these body aches!

  • I woke up with A cold this morning too, joys of having a preschooler. I took some tylenol but that's all I want to take. I hope you feel better soon!
  • Omg...yes. Over here with the worst cold. I am never sick, but caught DS cold. I feel and sound horrible. I am following I need all the help I can get.
  • @mslove03  I am right there with you! I can't remember the last time I was sick. I'm sure my DS brought lovely germs home from school. I've been drinking water like crazy and just laying down. I'm really trying to not have to take any Tylenol.

  • I just got over one that DH gave me. *insert mean glare at him*. I took off work two days, when I normally would have toughed it out. Lots of orange juice, water, hot water with honey, chamomile tea, soups, and steamy showers (but checking temp to make sure it didn't get too high first). I slept about 18 hours a day and took 10 showers, but I feel much better now and went back to work yesterday. Gargling with warm salt water kept the sore throat away. I also had two moments of coughing desperation and took a couple of cough drops, but they seemed safe from what I read online and on package. I know all of this is stuff you already know, but unfortunately I think that is all there is. :/

    Hope we you feel better!
  • Rest and fluids. I'm down and out too. :( Trying hard not to take anything.
  • Everyone who has a cold...go get a NeilMed sinus rinse kit! It's like a neti pot but better!

  • Just an update...came home from work and had a 100.3 temp. All advice nurse at OB office and they had me take 2 regular strength Tylenol, 3 hours later temp is 98.6 and I'm feeling great except for a stupid dry cough (which could be partial allergies). Just as a precautionary they are having me take prescription Tamiflu for 5 days to kill off any flu string I may have. They assured me it's totally safe for baby. So if you are really feel horrible please call your OB office and see what they say. I never thought of this going to any flu string so I'm glad they are taking the precaution to keep me healthy for baby.

  • I was sick about 3 weeks ago and it came back in full force this week. I called the Advice Nurse and she gave me a list of baby-safe stuff to take in moderation (and also safe for breastfeeding since my 14m old is still nursing). So tylenol is still OK, basic Mucinex (guafenesin) and Benadryl. My last pregnancy I refused to take anything and just suffered, but having a toddler while being sick is a whole new level of suffering. I needed some relief!

If you download Ovia, theres a drug safety section in the app that really helped me with my last pregnancy. While first and foremost you should always check with the doctor, the app was still helpful. :)

  • @nsquaredlife13 I wasn't going to call but once I saw my temp I decided better to be safe than sorry. Got my first does of tamiflu in and am feeling fine but am going to lay low a swirl the bug out. I didn't want to take anything but the nurse said my body is far worse off being miserable than using something safe that will help and I won't be stressing out my body feeling sick. So I gave in.

but great to know about that app! I'll have to look in to downloading it. Hope you feel better soon!

  • @Tiffanih18 aww feel better!! Sometimes you just have to take care of yourself, you know?

The Ovia app also has a food safety list too... super helpful if you're a foodie! :)

  • @nsquaredlife13 absolutely, decided I needed to take care of me so I can be healthy for the baby.

The app is great! For someone who hasn't been pregnant in 8 years things have changed from dos and donts, foods, etc. so it's great.
