Bridesmaid Dress

So no real point other than to vent, but also looking for opinions on what others would do in my situation...

I'm in two upcoming weddings-my brother's wedding in July (6 months pregnant), and my cousin's in Oct (wedding is 10/8; EDD 10/16!).

We went shopping for dresses for the July wedding this past Saturday, the same day I got my BFP. The dress HAD to be ordered that day plus rush shipped in order to be in for the wedding. Since I haven't told anyone yet, I went last for the fitting after everyone else had left. Since the dress is short, they were worried about my bump pulling the front up (like a high-low dress), so I had to order the tall version (extra $25), and 3 sixes larger (another extra $25). So I ended up paying the price of the dress plus $80 in extras.

For the October wedding, we already bought our dresses from David Bridal and they are in. The design is getting discontinued this month, so I'm on my way there now to hopefully size exchange my dress from my current size to a 9-months pregnant size.

Like I said, no real point to this post other than I can't really talk to anyone else about it since no one really knows yet. A big part of me fears that I'm ordering these dresses assuming I'll be pregnant and then have a loss. However, I also think it would be stupid of me to not plan ahead since "today I am pregnant." (ESPECIALLY since the dress decisions need made now and I can't wait a month or two). Ugh

Re: Bridesmaid Dress

  • I'm sorry!! Sucks you had to pay that much extra! I'm in a wedding 3ish weeks before my due date so I know the stress!!

  • Loading the player...
  • @tngoldengirl did you get your dress yet?
  • Well I was very fortunate to have a bride that said we could all order whatever dress, as long as it was long and navy, so that worked out and I got a maternity dress. Still worried about like sticking out (in more ways than one lol). But last time I was a bridesmaid I was pregnant too and had to deal with the short dress from DB. Then the bride postponed her wedding last minute and we had to change all over again. Sorry, no good advice. But I hope it all works out! Dresses can always be made smaller, but not much bigger. You'll look beautiful!

  • Thanks! That was my thinking-I would rather have the extra material to work with if needed.

Lucky you got to order your own dress!
  • I am having the same problem. I am in a black tie wedding in June I need to find a black sequin dress for. Really hard to order one now not knowing what size I will be and I don't want to spent $$$$ on a formal maternity gown either that may never be worn again. I found a great bump friendly dress on rent the runway that booked in all sizes the day is was released for her June wedding weekend

  • Same issue here, we were TTC while I went and picked out my bridesmaid dress from David Bridal and they are in and discontinued so if I cannot fit into it I may be out of luck. Their wedding is in July so I will be 26ish weeks by then. It is a short dress so I am worried about it going too high in the front but I think I might try it on when I go home because it was already tight fitting on the chest and since my chest has already got bigger just from being 6 weeks pregnant I am not sure if it will fit there!

  • I'm in a similar boat. I'm MOH in a wedding in May, technically it's a destination wedding may 7 (which I'm now not going to bc of zika) with an at-home reception the end of May. I'd be 16 weeks by then.

I wasn't expecting to get pregnant, honestly, and I actually lost enough weight between ordering my BM dress and when it came in so that I just exchanged it for a size smaller just a few days before my BFP. Now I don't know if it will fit at all by the end of May

I know how you feel.  My fiancé and I were in the middle of our wedding planning. Everything already has a deposit and the girls were starting the shower and bachelorette party plans. ...last Tuesday I got my BFP....our wedding is planned for Oct 14th...im due Oct 7th! My dress is on its way,  so we have to postpone the wedding because there's no way around it. So I totally know how frustrated you are.

We aren't telling any of our vendors or family members until after the first ultrasound. It should still give us enough time to send out save the dates and invitations if we are not fortunate enough to have a successful pregnancy (i miscarried in 2013 at 7 weeks).

Try to stay calm, hopefully your dress for Oct can be exchanged. You can't blame yourself,  it's part of life. Best advice ever given to me about pregnancy - there's never an opportune time to be pregnant. I'm sure your family and friends will be so excited for you when you tell them the news!!! Good luck!!
  • My sister is getting married the beginning of June in Aruba and I am the MOH. She knows i'm pregnant so she said i could have a long dress if I wanted. We are going to David's Bridal on Thursday of next week to start looking/pick out/order a dress. I'll be 23 weeks at the time of the wedding, but last pregnancy I was showing before 12 weeks, so i'm not even sure what size to get. A friend of mine said that when she went they had a belly to put on to try with the dress, perhaps that will help? idk. ::sigh::

  • Oh man, I'm so glad I'm not alone!

I'm a MOH in a wedding 4/16 and a BM on 6/24. I have my dresses for both and I really didn't think we'd be pregnant so quickly after Mirena getting removed in Nov.

My April dress was a little loose fitting, so fingers crossed I can squeeze in to that one. My June wedding dress is a discontinued style by David's and the only one left even close to my size. When I tried it on, I actually said to my bride, "It's a perfect fit, so let's don't hope I get pregnant quick!" Whoops, lol. I don't actually have another plan for it and (just like everyone else) I don't want to tell anyone until have the first u/s so I'm just going to sit on it for a while and cross that bridge when I get there.

Sorry I don't have any advice, but I'm glad I'm not alone!

  • This is tricky!  I have no weddings this year yet and will hopefully avoid this situation.  My cousin got engaged a few days ago and I don't even know if she'll ask me to be a bridesmaid but she was saying she is thinking wedding in either September 2016 or April 2017 (for weather and other reasons) and I was like "OH APRIL IS DEFINITELY THE WAY TO GO" lol.
  • Im not in the wedding but one of my best friends is getting married October 16, and Im due October 3.  The wedding is in California wine country and I live in the interior of Alaska. I will probably have to have a c-section with my prior pregnancy also being a c-section.  I feel bad that I will probably miss her wedding since she came to mine in July 2014, but I feel like she'll understand.  My plan is to wait until 13 weeks or so and then let her be the first friend I tell so I can explain why I probably will have to miss her wedding. I figure that and a cool gift and some precious baby pics will be good!

  • My SIL found out she was pregnant after saying yes to being my MOH. Her dress didn't fit when the wedding came, so I had her buy a different dress, in a different color than the rest of my bridesmaids. It depends on the couple that's getting married. If something doesn't work out, it doesn't work out. The wedding shouldn't be about what the party is wearing, it's about their mariage. Don't stress.

  • Yeah I'm not worried about it per say, mainly just being superstitiuos that I'm making all these alternative arrangements and then I won't actually be pregnant by the weddings.

I did go to DB today and they did a size exchange for the dress for the Oct wedding at no extra charge-yay!
  • I'm in a very similar situation. My EDD is October 15. I am in a wedding at the end of September and one on October 23rd. I haven't purchased a dress for either wedding yet because I was waiting for my BFP, and to see what size I would need to buy. Bridesmaid dresses already run large, so it's killing me to think that I'm going to have to buy a dress 3 sizes too big that I'll never wear again.
  • Same boat, but fortunately I can pick any dress, they're not even picky about color. I'm just going to get an empire waist with a loose flowy skirt.  I'm going to be 30 weeks.

This is my plan, but we will see what they have when we go on Thursday.

Congrats! I'm getting married April 2! hahah. Well legally we are already married but we are having the actually ceremony and such. I haven't even bought a dress yet (this is Tanzania, everything is slow) so I'm hoping I'l be able to estimate size...

  • Ugh, I totally relate.  My brother-in-law is getting married Sep 17, and I'm due Oct 7.  His fiance asked me to be in the wedding last weekend, and I'm like uh...as long as it's a flowy/loose dress?

One of my best friends was about 8 months pregnant in my wedding, and she came out just fine!  So hopefully we can have some luck!  It's my first pregnancy and I swear I'm going to blow up like a balloon, but also I'm intent on not gaining unnecessary weight.
  • This time last year, my MOH was KU, with pretty much the same EDD as I have now.  My wedding was early May.  I had my bridesmaids pick their dress from J.Crew, I just told them which color to get.  I think she ordered two different styles in two different sizes to try to figure out which would be best with the bump, and then held onto the two sizes until she got closer and figured out which would fit best.  The dress ended up looking great!  But I'm not sure if that's a possibility if you're ordering the dress through a more traditional bridal store.  If you end up needing another size, you can at least try to sell your original dress online?  Or hopefully you can get it altered to work somehow.
