Can't sleep!

I'm 37 weeks & can not sleep! I only sleep about 4 hours a night no matter how exhausted I feel, any suggestions on how to cope!

Re: Can't sleep!

  • Girl me too. I flip between left and right. Thing is, right side gives me heartburn and baby HATES it (starts kicking and making me uncomfortable). Left side was the best... Until I started getting TERRIBLE hip and pelvic pain from the relaxin hormone. I am most comfortable on my left side with a thick body pillow on my back to kinda lean into and a thinner pillow between my legs.

My my next suggestion would be a recliner. I'm mr to that stage yet but I definitely see it in my future.

  • I swear it's your body preparing you for the lack of sleep you'll experience with a newborn.
  • Just starting to get there but only 35 weeks... Good luck girls, almost there!
  • I've been a chronic insomniac my whole life (seriously my mother went to basic training when I was 18 months old and was well rested with the 3 hours of sleep she got). The other night I think I slept 2 hours. I've been trying to sleep as much as I can as I know I won't sleep with a newborn. I used to function for 5 days straight with no sleep but I'm not young enough to do that anymore!

I've always slept better when my upper body is more at a 45 degree or higher angle. I use pillows to prop myself up, that has helped me with my hip pain, and I find I can sleep on my back still without tossing and turning too much.

I really recommend making sure to practice good sleep hygiene, no electronics in the bedroom, disconnect at least half an hour before bed. If you are tossing and turning get up and do something mundane for a few minutes (like folding laundry) it can help your brain relax. I find listening to audio books with my headphones on can help me pass out as well. When it's been really bad I listen to nap time music (lullaby's, soft classical music), works in daycare, works for me.

  • I am struggling with the same issue! I can not sleep at all it seems. Constantly tossing and turning, side and leg pain. Heartburn has been horrible, plus it's so dry, I need to drink water, causing me to get up a million times during the night to pee! I can not wait to sleep on my stomach!! It's going to be heavenly! Hang in there ladies, just a few weeks to go.... but then again, we still won't be sleeping lol.
  • I'm currently:  Right side for two hours, wake up due to hip pain, realize have to pee anyway, get up to pee.  Left side for two hours, wake up due to hip pain, realize have to pee anyway, get up to pee.  Make pile of pillows behind me and fall asleep sitting up for two hours, wake up having to pee, get up to pee, realize while walking to bathroom that my hips have stopped hurting.  Fall back asleep on right side, only one hour passes before waking up due to hip pain, realize have to pee.............and so on.  All freaking night!  And now I've developed that pain in the middle of my pelvis which is a bummer too.
  • Totally with all of you...and suffering from body aches and chills from something else too today.  Yesterday I was leaving the house with my 5 year old and said something to her about being excited to have the baby out so I can sleep (because of the discomfort).  Her reply: "but then she will just be screaming at you".  How right she is....

  • I know everyone talks so much about the sleep deprivation after the baby arrives, but I have to imagine that about 17-20 pounds coming off me all at once should at least make it so that when I DO sleep my joints don't hurt like this!
  • @mamaroar this is EXACTLY me.  Wake up every two hours almost on the dot b/c of hip pain and having to pee.  Go to the bathroom and flip over, then two hours later wake up again.  My body is definitely preparing me for the sleep/eat cycle of a newborn!
  • I only wake up once to pee in middle of the night at like 4 am and then I'm wide awake! I have like the urge to get up and do stuff but I lay back down and force myself to go back to sleep. So annoying. I feel bad because I end up waking my husband every night and then somehow in the morning we are both so tired and can't get up. It doesn't help that I'm sick with a cold either.  Haven't been sleeping well in general.
  • Me and the husband have been sleeping in separate rooms for months now!  It's so annoying.  Before being pg I could literally sleep through a freight train running through the middle of my room.  Now, if my husband so much as breathes too loud, I cannot get any rest.  So, after weeks of me being exhausted (this was before I was even showing so no hip pain, just sudden intolerance to noise) and him being tired of me sleep smacking him for being too loud, we split up at bedtime.  Our bedroom is huge and our "nursery" is in our room right now - at least after baby comes neither of us will sleep but at least we'll be in the same room again.
  • My DH has officially been banished to the couch as well.  Once the hip pain started to be an every-night thing, the only thing that helped was an elaborate pillow configuration that basically takes up our whole bed (granted, it's only a double to begin with).  I really miss sleeping in the same bed with him though.  I know neither of us will be getting much sleep once LO arrives, but at least we'll be together!
  • DH and I sleep separately too now! I used to not be able to sleep without him, now it drives me crazy if he tries!

Im up all night too with the same things as PP and it would annoy me to no end that he was sound asleep.

Hes been in the guest room for months now!
  • So I just bought an air purifier and I LOVE it.....especially the white noise it makes. It seems to drown out all the annoying sounds that seem to wake me up and that's in between the pee breaks and re-adjusting and heartburn. So the minute my husband made a snarky remark about how the air purifier sounds like a jet engine I about lost it!!! If a little fan sound drowns out all the moaning and snoring sounds he makes throughout the night along with every other little creak and noise in the house and allows me to sleep an extra 20 minutes here and there then you will be banished to another room or the couch buddy because my new favorite little jet engine is staying!!!
  • I feel you! I can't stay comfortable on either side for long plus I have four year old twins who still wake at night and get into bed with us. I tell myself at least newborn night waking won't be a shock to my system...I've been a mess for four years!
  • DH is sick and was whining yesterday about how terribly he slept. It took everything I had to bite my tongue. he already sprawls himself out over 3/4 of the bed every night and has the nerve to complain about my body pillow "taking up too much room." *eye roll*

Lol I basically snap back at my hubby when he complains that he wakes up tired or that he slept terribly. I just look at him with zero sympathy. Funny he complains he slept so bad, yet snores so loud every night and conveniently never hears the dog whimpering next to him to go to the bathroom. Slept terribly my ass lol
