September 2016 Moms

Should we have a "What's your baby's sex!" thread?

I figure a few mommas here will be finding out their babies sex soon either by blood testing or ultrasounds in the next few weeks.  I was thinking maybe we should have a sticky thread created to avoid a bunch of It's a BOY or GIRL threads.

What do you all think?

I plan on finding out early at 15-16 weeks and thats in 5-6 weeks from now.

  • Yes! I'm not finding out for 10 more weeks (UGH!) but I've read that some ladies here are getting their genetic testing results in the next week or two so it would be great having a place where we can all share!

  • @AlwaysAuntNeverMom 8-10 more weeks here too, but a sex thread is a great idea!

  • I'm pretty sure it goes on the due date spread sheet
  • Yep I like it :)
  • @lovelylauren86 I like the idea of it going on the due date sheet, but an actual thread for everyone to AW is nice and will keep the board clean. One central place for everyone to share is far better than 100 separate posts.

We've got 11 weeks until our a/s. I was much more impatient with my first to find out. This time, I'm kind of enjoying the not knowing stage.

  • For anyone finding out early via u/s, keep in mind that it's less accurate the farther away from 20 weeks you are. Obviously, it's a 50/50 shot so the odds of the tech being right are still high, but just throwing that out there. We won't find out, if at all, until the 20 week anatomy scan. Still considering going team green.

  • Won't find out until 20 weeks, and I feel pretty far along of the group at 10+ weeks now.. Not doing genetic testing though, so I'm sure plenty will get results sooner.  I'll chime in but won't be for over 2 months, anatomy scan not scheduled or anything

  • On my last BMB we had a "team pink" "team blue" and "team green" thread. It really kept the board clutter free.

  • I like the idea of a thread for people to announce along with the spreadsheet.  We should have our Panorama results back in about a week and a half and will be able to find out then.  Not sure yet if we will wait to find out the sex for a little while longer or not.  DH will probably want to know right away!  (The genetic counselor will call with the results but is writing the sex down for us to open later).

  • I like the idea of a separate thread too. I should know the gender in five days!!!
  • I think that'd be great! I found out a couple days ago from a Counsyl NIPT (8 day turnaround, including the weekend) so I'm sure many more results will be rolling in soon.

  • what are these blood tests that everyone is doing to find out the sex of the baby?  Are these upon your request or is this "normal" blood work?

with my first we just had ultrasounds to tell us...but i have a friend who is on her third and this time around she found out through blood work.

Just wondering if there is something i can ask to have done to find out sooner!

  • @erinmarie86 For me, finding out the baby's sex is an option through one of the genetic tests I'm having done.  There are various brand names of the test as well as company's who administer it and evaluate the labs so it can be called many things.  But, from what I can tell, anyone who is finding out sex this early via bloodwork is through some sort of genetic testing.  Has you OB brought that up to you yet?

  • @JennM624 it was not brought up at my last(first) appointment...all that was brought up was the typical blood work and ultra sounds that check for things like downs syndrom. I'm not aware that this blood work can tell me the sex of the baby.  I believe it's the same blood work i had done the first time.  However, I am switching doctors so I don't know if things will change at my next appointment.

@ThurstobertayI just did the counsyl NIPT test, too! Is there a way to see results but not see the sex or if I look online, will I see both at the same time? Also, were you able to see online before your dr called? Thanks!

  • @erinmarie86 I probably should have added that not every OB does these same genetic tests.  The same OB I have now, when I was pregnant with my daughter 3 years ago, did not offer the same genetic screenings that include baby's sex.  At that time, I had a simpler blood panel accompanied by the NT scan because that was all she offered at the time.  She doesn't even offer that anymore.  So every doctor is different.  I'm assuming if your OB didn't bring it up, they probably don't offer it.  But if you're switching anyway, maybe your next one will.

  • @PJpeppercorn Yes, when your results are released you'll first see your trisomy/chromosome results, and underneath there is a "Do you want to know the sex of your baby?" button. I had to click the button before I could see any information, so if you want to skip or delay finding that out, you definitely can.

My results were available online before my doctor called, but I think different offices might handle this differently. Your doctor has to consent to release the results, so I'm guessing he gave the all clear but a nurse was not able to call until the following day.

@erinmarie86 My OB gave me a consent form with a list of the various test options that were available to me, and the cell-free DNA test (mine was done by Counsyl but there are tons of other vendors and variations) was one of them. If you're interested in it I'd ask explicitly and they probably have a vendor they can recommend.

I went with the DNA test because in one of my previous pregnancies, the NT scan caused me a ton of stress and hand-wringing when I had a result just a smidgen outside the normal range. Your mileage will vary with any prenatal testing
there have been a couple threads on this very topic recently – but I'm glad I went with the NIPT since it's supposed to be quite accurate and tests for a greater range of disorders. That, and my insurance is horrid so the difference in price between the cash-pay NIPT and a covered NT scan was negligible.

  • @erinmarie86 My midwife had talked about an amniocentesis to check for chromosomal disorders and I asked if there was another test that didn't have a chance of miscarriage, which is when she told me about the NIPT blood test. I think we'll probably go that route although we'll wait until the 18-20 week scan to find out the sex that way instead.
  • @Thurstobertay thank you! So helpful!

I think one thread is a good idea rather than many more, but please please don't make it a sticky... we have so many already we have to scroll past. And it will only be relevant for a short amount of time. Except for team green people, but they can announce sex in the birth announcement topic they make.

  • Speaking of sticky threads, are we going to keep the intro thread sticky for good? I feel like the amount of newbies we are getting is slowing down, and will just keep dwindling.

  • Maybe we could replace the intro/newbie thread with the sex thread?

  • Thurstobertay having 3 boys is awesome!!  My two youngest are so close!

My OB brought up the genetic testing at my 1st appointment.   I am going with Verify by Progenity because it will only be $99 OFP if my insurance doesn't cover it.  I was going to call next week and see if I can get the kit and paperwork next week because it is not done at my OBs office.  If not I will have to wait till 12 weeks at my next appointment.

  • I'm supposed to have to wait till week 20 to find out (ugh but that's so far away!!!), but I'm going in a few weeks for the second U/S and standard genetic testing. My doc didn't say anything about finding out the gender from the testing, but you better believe I'm going to ask :) The Chinese Gender thing says it's a boy... anyone had that not be accurate?

It was right with my first. But I've also seen it be wrong. It's 50/50 so it has pretty good odds of seeming right.
