Opinions on a Name

Okay, I know it's early. But we've already started. :)

Early in our discussions we talked about the first name Mae. My husband's grandmother's name was Twyla Mae and she is probably the strongest, sweetest, most wonderful woman I've ever known. She was the rock of the family and she passed away last year, and it hit the family hard. I love the name Mae or Maeve and we both agreed that we wanted to honor her by naming a child after her (if we have a girl).

We talked about a lot of middle names. Our absolute favorite combo was Mae Elizabeth. BUT we found out his grandmother's full name was Twyla Mae Elizabeth (Last Name)

Here's where we disagree. I feel like it would be weird to give our child almost the exact same name as his grandmother. Or at the very least I think we should ask his grandfather if he's ok with that. I don't know why it bothers me so much. I still love the name but I don't know ... it just doesn't sit right with me. H thinks I'm being weird about it. What say you?

Re: Opinions on a Name

  • I think it's a lovely name. It's not her exact name, so I think it's a nice tribute. If it's the one you feel works best, then I would go for it. :)

  • I think it's fine. What if you went with Elizabeth Mae instead if it really bothered you?

  • I feel like Mae is such a "go-to" middle name. I mean, it's pretty, but we both really love Mae as a first name.

  • I see no problem in using it. I would talk to your DH's grandfather first, just so he isn't caught off gaurd and has time for it to sink in, it may be hard for him to hear the name. But I see no problem in using both names.
  • I love Mae as a first name, and it's not Grandma's first name, so I think it would be really cool.

  • Agreed. Mae is lovely as a first name. There are plenty of other names to go with it if you feel Elizabeth is too similar.
  • I love the name Mae as a first name and I think Elizabeth goes very well with it as a middle name! It is a beautiful name!

  • Mae is a beautiful first name. I see what you're saying about not wanting her to have the exact same name, but since you are not using grandma's first name, I think it's ok.
  • Mae is beautiful. Maybe if you love Elizabeth so much, you can change the spelling. Islabeth, elissabeth, lizbeth, etc

  • Love Mae! It was on my list for my daughter but my husband vetoed. Mae Elizabeth is beautiful together too.

  • I love Mae Elizabeth!
  • I like the idea of Maeve.  It pays tribute but still gives your daughter her own name.
  • I think Mae is a beautiful name!! I also love Mae Elizabeth, and I think others are right that without the first name of grandmother, it is not exactly the same so I wouldn't worry about it. I would follow the advice of pp and probably talk to her husband about it first though! I have a hunch he'd be honored and touched at the idea.
  • I wouldn't be overly concerned with the names being so similar. I love Mae - it was my great grandmother's middle name and I would absolutely use it as a middle name if we have a girl this go-round. It's pretty rare that kids go by first and middle name, so go with whatever you like!  Also, Mae Elizabeth could bring about some cute nicknames... my initials were A.D. as a kid and I called myself "A.D." all the time.. "M.E" is super cute

  • Thanks all! We both love Mae Elizabeth, so the next time we see H's grandfather we're going to talk to him about it. I'm completely prepared to respect his wishes if he says no - I understand it could be hard for him to hear. He's the sweetest man too. I've never seen a couple more in love than they were. <3
