Scared and confused (UPDATED: loss mentioned)

(Updated in thread) So... I started spotting yesterday morning, but only when I wiped. It was pink at first then turned to brown mixed with cervical mucus by the afternoon.(tmi, sorry) I didn't see anything before I went to bed last night but it was back to brown this morning so I went to the ER. Had blood test and a trans-vaginal ultrasound.  Dr said my HCG was at 1200 and baby heart rate was 170. Of course he also said it was a threatened miscarriage. I'm scared out of my mind now. This is my first pregnancy so I really don't know what to expect. I know the heart rate is great but shouldn't my HCG levels be higher? He told me I was 7 weeks days but I was thinking I was 6 weeks. My first OB visit isn't until Feb 17.

Re: Scared and confused (UPDATED: loss mentioned)

  • Sorry you are going through this :-(
are you positive he said 1,200 not 12,000? Because usually a heartbeat wouldn't even be able to be seen at 1,200 ... Generally you will only be able to see a heartbeat if your HCG is higher than 3,000,
Either way though, if he said there's a heartbeat of 170 then that's a really good sign.
  • I hate the term 'threatened miscarriage'. HB is good, did they check your progesterone? Can you call your doctor to see if you can go in sooner?
  • Loading the player...
  • From what I've read on here, basically anyone who goes to the ER with bleeding in early pregnancy is a "threatened miscarriage".  I agree with PP, the hCG seems way too low to find a heart rate at all, did they mean 12,000?  In any case, hearing a solid heart rate is a good sign, hopefully when you follow up with your doctor you'll get some more reassurances.
  • " threatened miscarriage " or " threatened abortion" is the correct medical term as non sensitive as it is. That's what it is.
Brown blood is old blood and could have been a SCH , a clot behind the cervix etc... But no bright red blood is a good thing.
I know first hand how scary it is to wipe and see that. It's more common than people talk about to have spotting or bleeding during pregnancy.
Im guessing you were mistaken that your Hcg was only 1,200 as typically we don't get a heartbeat until around 6 weeks and over 2000 Hcg even though it can vary a bit.
  • Ugh so sorry
  • Thanks for the replies ladies. He probably did say 12000, but I am so worried my mind is all over the place. I am going to call my OB first thing Monday morning. My mom told me to call and leave a message with her answering service tomorrow so that they can get the message to her. I am praying that everything is ok.

  • Thanks! Still praying.
  • So sorry you are going thru this. Sadly the only thing you can do is try to stay calm and positive as best you can. I know, easier said then done. Vent here if you need to, I'll be thinking of you & praying for you& your little one to come thru healthy!

If if its of any comfort, a good friend of mine had three separate cases of bleeding thru pregnancy (once in each trimester) she was told threatened MC each time, today she's a proud momma of a super adorable and chubby little girl ❤️
  • Good sign so far!!
  • ER docs are pretty lousy at all things pregnancy related. When I was pregnant, my doc said not to go unless I had severe bleeding or debilitating pain, because more often than not you get slapped with the threatened miscarriage diagnosis and sent on your way. They just scare you more than anything. Glad things are looking good!

I lurk. I snark. I offer sound advice if you're not BSC. You may not like me. I'm okay with it.

  • I'm 6w4d today and have been spotting since 4w. Saw my OB early during week 4 and found out I have an irritated blood vessel on my cervix but she said everything else looked good. Got my hcg levels back and things were progressing. I have my first US on Friday and can't wait to see what is going on. Spotting for me comes and goes so I can absolutely relate to the feelings that you're having!! Just try to stay calm :-)

  • Another update: I started bleeding real heavy yesterday after my appointment.  I passed a big clot, called the dr office. Nurse said I'm possibly having a miscarriage. I had a headache most of the night and passed another clot. Mild cramping but nothing extreem. Now I'm really confused and even more scared. I go back to my OB at 215 today. How could things look so good one min and 2 hours later turn so bad?

So sorry you're going through this. Thoughts and prayers to you, hope it's less serious than nurse said. Take care.

  • So sorry you're going through this. Hopefully it's something as simple as an undiagnosed SCH and baby is a ok. Creepy internet hugs to you and positive thoughts.

  • So sorry for your loss! :(
  • Thanks ladies.  I'm at peace. I prayed about it and I know that God is in control. They told me I expelled everything but they gave me the Cytotec pills just to be sure. I have to wait till my next cycle and go back 21 days after to do blood work for progesterone levels. I'm just praying that all is well and I will have a healthy pregnancy soon.
  • Sorry to hear this!!!!!
