Preterm Labor

I am 35 weeks today. On Monday, I went for my non-stress test and found out I was having contractions as well. So my doctor checked to see if I was dilating and sure enough I was 1 cm. I go back tomorrow for another non-stress test. Hopefully they will check again and see if I have dilated anymore.

Re: Preterm Labor

  • I was a 1 from 26 weeks on, so I wouldn't worry too much. :) I think that's pretty common.

  • did you have a question, or..?
  • If they didn't send you to L&D, and your doctor didn't express concern about you being in PTL, you probably aren't. The contractions are probably just your body preparing. And as PP stated, you can be dilated and not be in labor. There are women that walk around 1,2,3,4, even 5 cm dilated for weeks that arent in active labor. Hope all goes well for you tomorrow

  • That's not really preterm labor....

At my last non stress test at 34 weeks I have showing contractions every 3 minutes on the monitor.  Last week at 35 weeks I was dilated to 3cm.  I know people who walk around at 4cm dilated for weeks and make it all the way to 40 weeks...
  • I had contractions from 36w to 41w with my daughter, so...

Labor progresses, yours may or may not go anywhere for a while.

  • I'm having what is called prodromal labor- my labor has progressed me to 6cm but my contractions aren't intensifying so I've been sent home.  At SIX cm.

Believe me- me too lol.  I'm sitting at work (bored and) nervous because I don't know what to expect next.

  • If you are worried it's too early, some studies show that lots of extra protein can stop preterm labor. The study suggests that preterm labor is sometimes caused by lack of protein and/or nutrients to the baby, so the body starts to send the baby out to protect both baby and mommy.

I've had experience with this when my second child tried to come at 26 weeks. :/ I went straight home and ate almost 2lbs of ground beef made into burger patties just to get crazy protein fast. It worked! Within 1 hour, the contractions completely stopped! I have talked with other friends who have used eggs, and other sources of protein when in early labor, and had the same outcome.

Yeah- I did.  All my discharge papers say is progression to normal activity w/no restrictions.  But I'm closer to the hospital (5 minutes) as compared to home (30 minutes).

Is there any science to back this up? Which studies?

ETA: As a preemie mom, I find it pretty insulting to say I might not have had my son at 33 weeks if I had just eaten a steak.

  • I was cramping on Monday just before my appointment so my OB decided to do an internal and test for preterm labor. I'm 2 cm, having contractions but nothing consistent, have lost my mucus plug (yuck) but the test for preterm labor came back negative so she doesn't see me having baby in the next two weeks. I bet its nothing to worry about.
