Returning to work after Maternity Leave..

Hi all, I'm in a bit of a situation and I need some honest advice. I had a baby via c-section 4 weeks ago. I planned to return to work at my current job 8 weeks after the delivery. Before I left, my company hired and had me train another person for my job while I'm out for maternity leave. I was pretty much pushed out of my office and it was given to her, just while I'm out. When I return, they said everything would go back to normal and the new girl will be put into a different position. I honestly did plan or returning but recently, a new job offer has come up for me. I came across it online, thought why not apply for it, not really expecting to get a call back. We'll I was called in for an interview a few days later. Two days after the interview, I received an offer call.

I highly respect and love all the people I currently work with. It's a very small family owned company. They gave me 3 weeks paid maternity leave and I asked if I could use my 2 weeks vacation pay (before I interviewed for another job). I planned on returning. After getting this new job offer, I want to quit but I don't know how or what to say. At my current job, I'm just doing administrative assistant stuff. I'm not using my bachelor's degree at all. With my new job, I will be using my degree. I think I'd enjoy it very much. I just feel horrible for putting in a notice as soon as I return. They've given me 5 weeks of pay, a baby shower, plus sent me a gift basket after I had the baby. They've kept in contact and have told me they miss me and can't wait for me to return. How do I walk in there and tell them ive found another job after they've done so much for me? Everyone keeps telling me I need to do what's best for me and honestly, I don't want to do what I'm doing at this current job any longer. I want to use my degree. I just don't know how to leave without upsetting anyone. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Well they already have someone trained for your position so if you do leave it probably wouldn't hurt the company too badly. I would just tell them that you sincerely appreciate everything they have done for you but at this point in time you need to move on. People leave jobs for all sorts of reasons. I'm sure they will understand.

I've said it before. Just be honest. If they're as awesome as you say they are, they'll understand. And congrats on the new job!

If you would be happier and able to use your education, I say go for the new job and what the PP's have said.

I work in HR and can tell you this happens ALL the time. If you have a better opportunity take it. You will regret it if you don't. Your current job will understand.
