Sinus Infection? Anyone else sick?

Is anyone else dealing with a sinus infection or some other illness right now? I called my doc yesterday and she said to try a neti pot and I could take Sudafed for 2 days and if it wasn't better after that to call again.  I also use euculyptus and peppermint essential oils on my sinuses and take some Tylenol for the pain (teeth ache). Does anyone else have any other home remedies that work for them? Thankfully my pregnancy symptoms have gone mostly away now I just feel like crap because I'm sick!

Re: Sinus Infection? Anyone else sick?

  • I had the crud for over a week. I also used Sudafed and Tylenol. I drank a lot of hot green tea with honey and lemon. Another thing that helped me some was to turn the water to it's hottest point in the shower and let it run for about 10 minutes with the door closed, go in and sit in the steam and it breaks things up nicely. I slept in the recliner for a few nights just because I could breathe better if I was not laying flat. There isn't too much we can do being pregnant. Good luck to you!!!

  • I am using the sinus rinse instead of the Netty pot. I think it works better honestly. I have been using breath right strips at night and they have worked wonders!! Also take a shower at night to clear your sinuses before bed.
  • I have had two colds since being pregnant, and while I tried the sinus rinse, it wasn't extremely helpful like I was hoping. I have heard being pregnant makes your sinuses swell in general, so I am just trying to get used to it. I took Benadryl at night while sick and still do if I really can't breathe and that seems to help some. Also, vicks vapor rub has been somewhat beneficial. Supposedly, if you rub vicks on your feet....that somehow helps?? Haven't tried it, but it will be worth a shot if I get another lovely cold! Good luck!!
  • Just following this because I am in the exact same boat!  I've been fighting a sinus infection since last Friday.  I've done the neti pot at least twice a day since Sunday.  It might be helping some.  I've also been running a vaporizer at night.  My doc said the same thing about the Sudafed - take it for 24 hours and if no improvement, call back or go to family doc to see if I need an antibiotic.  I hate to take anything unless I desperately need it so I'm putting off the sudafed for one more day to see if another night of the neti pot and vaporizer finally open me up.  If you use essential oils, someone also suggested running thieves or something similar through a diffuser. Hope you feel better soon!

  • I ended up with an ear infection and pneumonia this past week. Today is my first quasi functional day back. Don't hesitate to go in to see your doctor if you feel like you're getting worse not better!

Plain robotussin is fine, as is Benadryl.

  • Following this too! My doc had me take Claritan because I had an 11 day sinus headache. Was so hesitant to take anything including tylenol most days but by day 11 I was losing my mind. Must say the Claritan worked wonders! Other than that I've been adding a caffeinated bev in the afternoon which helps the headaches too, and taking extra long showers in the morning to clear some of the stuffiness out.

  • The Sudafed seems to be helping so far, however I feel like the pressure is now moving to my ears and my jaw. I have a feeling I'm going to need an antibiotic but we shall see.. I've been adding some essential oils to my shower and using Vicks as well. I did take a Claritin the first day, but have held of taking it again since I took the Sudafed. I'm going to take another Sudafed before bed tonight and see how it's going tomorrow.

  • I've had some congestion and frequent sneezing my entire pregnancy so far. So this week when it started getting worse I was totally in denial. But today I finally had to admit that I have a cold and it sucks! I already feel like crap lately due to the constant fatigue and now I'm sick on top of it. I've accomplished nothing this week at work.
  • Steam bathroom and will help and some lime with honey, boil cut up lime in water than pour it in cup add honey and drink up and rest a lot as well and keep fluids in your system water and kids pedialyte you should feel good mine lasted almost a week it sucks we can't do much for it
  • I take Allegra daily because I have terrible allergies and my doctor is ok with that. He said it's only a category C because it hasn't been around as long as Claritin or Zyrtec but it's pretty much the same thing so you could try that. Also when I was super congested I stood over a pot of steaming water and used a humidifier at night that has Vicks vapor rub in it. I think the steam is the trick and helped loosen up the congestion. Hope you feel better soon!

  • Yep. The sinus thing going around this year is awful! I used the neti pot religiously. I also used Alkalol, which is a sinus rinse with essential oils (I just used it in the neti pot according to the instructions). It's been two weeks, but the worst is over.

I agree with PP. Benedryl helped when nothing else would cut it. Drinking hot water with honey and lime (I like lemon) also helps. Hope you feel better soon!
  • Just an update, I did use the Sudafed for 24 hours and am using the neti pot with saline rinse twice a day.  My sinuses have almost cleared up and I didn't have to call my doctor for an antibiotic.  I also put vics on my feet and chest, some essential oils in my shower, used a heat pack on my neck, drank some tea, and used essential oils on my sinuses.  I hope everyone else is starting to feel better!
