Slow flow to medium flow nipple

recently it's been taking lo awhile to eat and now I'm trying to switch to medium flow nipples for 3 months plus. Lo has been gulping with the new nipple and choking and Than not eating when I take it away when he's choking. Any ideas on what I could do to make him slow down? I've held the bottle on the side but I'm not sure what else to do. Maybe I should stick with slow flow

Re: Slow flow to medium flow nipple

  • My lactation specialist just told me to transition my 3 month old to level 1 Dr. Browns. Prior to this, he only used preemie, even though he was born at 8lbs. The slower they eat, the better. She also recommended this video:

  • @janeedem , thanks for posting that video!  My LO's caregivers keep telling me to send more and more expressed breastmilk, now they want 6 oz per bottle, and I just can't pump that much.  I know I don't have a supply issue, she's around the 75th percentile for weight, peeing and pooping like a champ and doing great.  It's interesting, when my in-laws watch her at our house twice a week, she often doesn't finish a 5 oz bottle.  At daycare, they say she chugs it down and cries for more.  I think it's how comfortable she is in her environment combined with how she's fed.  In any case, I switched from avent's "2" nipple to a "1" for 0-3 months even though she's 4 now, just to help slow her feedings down and see if it helps them make the milk last through the day.  I'll suggest that they check out this video, too, if they're not familiar with the technique.
  • If baby is breastfed (you didn't specify EBF or FF) I think it was KellyMom that suggested sticking with slow flow for as long as baby will tolerate it because it most closely resembles milk flow while nursing! That suggestion may not apply for FF babies though, I don't know.
  • Lurking from November board.. My son will be 3 months Friday and is exclusively FF now and has been for about a month give or take. We ended up just switching to the size 2 nipple for 3+ month babies and at first he was sucking it down so hard he was choking like you said. He's such a vigorous eater and had to work hard with the size 1 nipples he was doing the same with these and it was more than he was expecting. We tried it for a day, I would burp him more frequently and thought maybe the next day I would put him back on the size 1. Now he's perfectly fine for him it was just an adjustment of having to working for the milk I think

November Mama here. I have read that breastfed babies should be taking in 1-1.5iz per hour. Also, the amount of BM need should not increase the formula does because the composition of your milk changes to meet babies needs. Do you have a lactation consultant in your area? Here we can go theLC, weight he baby, feed him and weigh him again to see what he is taking in.
