March 2016 Moms

measuring ahead

Hello

I'm a first time mom. At my 32nd week appointment my doctor stated I was measuring a full 4 weeks ahead. She found that odd and said she was going to look at the previous measurements ( this is a team of 5 total doctors) and also inquire on why my measurements were never previously told to me. She scheduled me for a growth ultrasound in which I take Thursday. Many people are telling me my due date is wrong. Some people are saying it's just a big baby. Anyone else experience this?

Re: measuring ahead

  • I have been consistently measuring 2-3 weeks ahead. At the ultrasound I had at 35 w 5 d all of the measurements were ahead and 90th+ percentile. My doctor is sticking with my due date and said that measurements tend to vary more toward the end and the earlier measurements and ultrasounds are more accurate for dating purposes. My due date is fine. I am just having a big baby.

  • I'm measuring 5.5 weeks ahead and have for some time. My dates are 100% on and my baby feels normal size. There's really no correlation and a lot of doctors don't even measure fundal height anymore. I polled around 20 mamas in a huge Facebook group, all of which measures 4+ weeks ahead. They're babies were all around 7 pounds, with the biggest being 9.5 or less and the smalles being 6 something.

You could also have a lot more amniotic fluid than the average woman, that can make a big difference at this point too.  The ultrasound should give you more info.  It's really not uncommon to have growth ultrasounds in the last month to check on size both big and small, I wouldn't worry!

Basically what @katy0990 said. At 28 weeks the ultrasound tech and doctor told me I was measuring 3 weeks ahead and that I would have a big baby. They scared the crap out of me and my doctor had to talk me down. LOL. My doctor will not induce me any earlier than 39 weeks no matter what though because she says the measurements can be off and it happens too often that they say the baby will be big and then they deliver a 6 lb baby for no reason at all. So...I'm hoping this kid is the same as his sister and wants to come out early all on his own :) (My daughter was 2 weeks early and was 8 lbs 2 oz). I just make big, healthy babies :)

  • Late term ultrasound can be off up to two pounds either way, so they literally tell you nothing. It's sort of laughable that they even do them and it's so nice to hear that some of your OBs recognize this and stick with keeping you pregnant until at least 39 weeks.

  • With my daughter I was measuring 2-3 weeks ahead consistently throughout my third trimester. Ultrasound at 36w (she was transverse breech and it was to check positioning, not measurement) put her at roughly 7lbs. When she was born at 41+3 she was 9.5lbs.

So yes, it can definitely mean you're going to have a big baby.

  • My son was born 4 weeks early and was big (8 pounds, 4 ounces) so EVERYONE and their mom tried to tell me that my doctors got my date wrong. However, they didn't because I was given a very early ultrasound (5w5d) and was out of the state the month before I conceived....people like to think they know more than doctors, but usually don't when it comes to things like this.

That said, a lot of people measure ahead and some have big babies and some have normal to small babies. It's not an exact science to measure mamas and babies while one is still inside the other, and as PPs have said, a lot of things can contribute (amniotic fluid, for instance). I wouldn't worry. Could mean a bit baby, could mean you go early, could mean nothing at all. At least you know he/she is healthy in there!

  • Getting an ultrasound done next week because my OB thinks this baby is going to be big too. DS was 9 lb 5 oz, and my husband was 11 lb 4 oz. Genetically my odds of a normal size baby are not good. Plus she was just feeling him last visit and said he seems big already. She's a new OB, and I don't know if she's going to want to induce early, or just be prepared if I struggle with pushing (like I did with DS).

  • What type of measurement did your doc take at your last appt? Are you four weeks ahead based on an ultrasound or fundal height? If it's fundal height, I wouldn't spend another moment thinking about it. Those can be highly inaccurate. If it was from an ultrasound, the previous posters are correct that early ultrasounds are far more accurate in identifying the due date. Either way, try not to worry until you hear back from your doc.
  • I just left the doctor. Everyone was telling me my due date was wrong too. However, my due date is correct. She is measuring 6 pounds 10 ounces. I'm 34 weeks and 3 days. The doctor says if I'm still pregnant in 3 weeks they will measure her again and I will have an option of choosing csection or vaginal.
  • I wouldn't worry too much about it. I'm 37 weeks now and have been measuring 4 weeks ahead since about 27 weeks. At first I thought that it would mean early labour, but now I just think that baby will be big. Late term ultrasounds are nortiously unreliable and off on weight / height.
  • I just had a 36 week growth scan and my little guy was measuring 7.5 lbs!  They are going to have the doctor review it tomorrow, but I am not going to worry about the size yet.  The ultrasounds can be off by a pound (according to the technician) or more (according to some other things I read.)
