Re: So no one is freaking out about leap year??

  • I think it would be very cool! I was more upset my first baby might be born on September 11

  • Haha! I think it's pretty cool, myself! My stepbrother is a leapyear baby and he thinks it's funny to tell people he's turning 6 or 7 or whatever. He usually just celebrates on the 28th of February on a non-leap year.

I don't want my own son to come on the leap day because it'd be almost 2 weeks early and I want him to finish growing before he comes out, but if that was on or around his due date I'd be all for it.

Ds1 was 15 days early and he had no issues. He was fully grown.

  • Wait, did they calculate our due dates knowing it is a leap year or did they ignore that fact altogether?
  • @Bubbles3592 I'm sure the leap year was taken into consideration. Based on my lmp, it was my original due date, it only changed after my dating scan.
  • My DH's birthday is on February 29th and he's always loved it. Every other year he just considers it his birthday for 48 hours straight.

I will admit though that it will suck for any leap year babies born next year. A lot of them will probably still be alive in the year 2100 and there is no leap day for that year.

Forgive me if I'm mistaken, but there won't be any leap year babies born next year, bc next year is not a leap year. And I don't understand what that had to do with 2100? Seriously not trying to sound snarky, just feeling like my pregnant brain is missing something here.

I think she means next year as in 2016, literally "next year". As far as the 2100, I was confused as well, so I'm no help there...lol.

So leap years aren't always 4 years, sometimes it does a weird skip see link https://www.timeanddate.com/date/leapyear.html   I think that is what she meant, that this baby would miss a birthday for an 8 year stretch if they lived a long time.

  • Sorry, I did mean "next year" as in 2016. And every 200 years there's not a leap year when there otherwise would be. So 2096 will be the last leap year until 2104.

    Hope that helps.

  • I was confused, too. The way I see it is that if the baby comes that day there will be perks, such as getting 2 days to hoose to celebrate on the off years and a fun fact to share during those stupid icebreaker activities that I hate. Yes there are negatives to it, but we would focus on the positive and make the child feel extra special for being born on such a unique day. Honestly, I would rather have a leap day baby than one born at Christmas time or another major holiday anyway.
  • Due March 5th, hoping for a "Leapling"!!! I think it would be so awesome!! Not to mention, I wouldn't mind being 5 days early!!! Lol
  • I'm due the 11th so it's possible, though unlikely. I wouldn't mind, I think it would actually be kind of cool to have a leapling. :)

Only issue would be that I'd be in the hospital on March 1st which is primary day here in MA and I really want to vote.

My husband and I requested absentee ballots just in case.
  • I was worried about this when I first got pregnant and made the connection, but the closer I get the less it seems like a big deal. Maybe I just have more important things to worry about lol.
  • I'm due on the 1st but I'm actually hoping that he comes on the 29th of February, its very unique IMO.

  • I asked my doctor if they took the leap day into consideration when calculating due date, and he told me they DID NOT.  It's only one day, so on the books I'm still listed as March 5, but I store the day March 4 in my head, and when if it possibly comes down to scheduling a C-section etc, the exact gestational time is a factor.  A day is a big difference when you're close to the end!!
