What does your sciatica feel like?

Hey everybody, I just had my monthly ob-gyn appointment and she told me I am experiencing pain along my sciatic nerve. I've noticed a bunch of folks have mentioned sciatica in posts and I've never had sciatica before, so I'm curious, what does your sciatica pain feel like?

I'm having pain in the small of my  back, my left butt, hip, through the thigh and down into my calf and even my ankle. The pain in my butt is aching mostly but it makes it hard to walk sometimes. Lower in my leg, the pain is more a burning, tingly pain.

I'm visiting my physical therapist this Wednesday and I've been looking up stretches too. What works for you?

Thanks all!

Re: What does your sciatica feel like?

  • I have had sciatica pain since I was in high school. It runs in my family. Mine also runs the left side of my back and leg. I've been seeing a chiropractor to help stretch it out and adjust it. I'm very worried about having more back labor than anything so I do a lot of yoga poses to stretch it as well as seeing my chiropractor. It's been a lot more severe since getting pregnant, stretching is key! A PT should be able to give you plenty of stretches to help, doing them several times a day should help with the tingling in the leg and releasing pressure off of that nerve!

  • I have had it in both pregnancies now. Butt, upper thigh, and lower back pain. I don't do too much for it except stretching, walking, & rocking on my yoga ball.

  • Hell. It feels like hell. I've had it for months already. I've had it on and off since I was a teenager and it always gets better when I build muscle...except that I haven't been able to workout all pregnancy. My mum said she had a walking stick while she was pregnant with me because I was sitting straight on her sciatic nerve. Fingers crossed it doesn't get that bad for me. My pain doesn't shoot down my leg, it's mostly up my bum cheek and into my lower back. I'm already limping :(

Just to clarify--- I don't love that it feels like hell for you. That sucks! I noticed I had a little limp this weekend.

@hellogoodbye2 , it sounds like I should inflate my yoga ball. I've already been walking as much as possible and I tried swimming.

@Maybaby0519 , I will work on all the stretches.

    Thanks all!

Anybody out there have pain that goes down their leg?
  • Sounds like sciatica to me. Eventually that last what happens when it gets really bad. I went to the chiropractor once and haven't experienced it since. Mine never went all the way down my leg, though.

  • @lalala2004 , it sounds like you have a good chiropractor. I've actually never been to one before! Definitely something to consider!

  • For me it has felt like someone was shoving a rod up my thigh and butt as well as numbness on the side of my thigh.

My PT told me to sit in a chair with both feet on the ground. Lift one leg at a time with your toe pointed. Once your leg is stretched in front of you flex your foot back. Then slowly lower your leg back down. Do 10 on each leg. It knocked out my sciatica completely.

  • Pelvic Tilts are another good exercise. They help with baby positioning and labor as well.

  • @KaKip I am not currently experiencing sciatica, but I have previously... and I had the pain radiating down my leg as well. It also ended up making my leg feel numb for a time.
  • Thanks @ jenbkc! I just visited my physical therapist and apparently I have an inflamed SI joint which has irritated the sciatic nerve (if I understand things correctly). I'm now the proud wearer of a super nifty maternity belt. I was also told to stay far far away from the elliptical machine.
