Migraines?

Anyone in our group get migraines? How are you managing them/what advice has your doc given you?

I get them frequently, and was on a daily preventative (Topomax) which my doctor asked me to stop before TTC. I can manage my migraines well with triptans (Relpax) but my OB asked me to stop taking. I've gotten one a week for the last month, and Tylenol doesn't come close to helping. I am headed in to the neurologist on Friday to talk about other options I can try. Not sure how I will survive till September with just Tylenol. :(

Re: Migraines?

  • I use peppermint oil and rub it on my temples and the nape of my neck and it provides almost instant relief.  Granted, I don't usually get migraines, but I have dealt with getting headaches my whole life.

This! I do this every time I have a headache. I wouldn't say mine are migraines but they are pretty bad and peppermint oil works on them.
  • TCA (tricyclic antidepressants) such as nortriptyline/amitryptyline can be helpful for migraine prevention (not acute pain) and can work just as well if not better than Topamax. Maybe worth talking to the OB or neurologist about? They have been used for decades in pregnant women and have no known risks.

  • Wow, I've never heard of that. *off to google* I'll definitely bring that up at my next appointment, thank you for the recommendation.

I always forget about peppermint oil. I will have to try this next time.

  • Sensory deprivation is the only way I get relief. That's easier said then done with work and a 2 year old.

  • Be careful on Google....remember you can read almost anything from there! If you have any specific questions, I can send you links to good info.

  • I use Magnesium and Riboflavin supplements for my migraines at the recommendation of my neurologist. Safe to use during pregnancy. I did end up stopping the riboflavin with DD's pregnancy and right around second tri ended up getting nonstop migraines. I needed to take FMLA for a month since I couldn't work. But after starting it up again, and taking it religiously since then, I've been pretty much migraine-free. At least, they're far more occasional and I can usually avoid the triggers. Good luck!
  • I was going to mention the magnesium. Someone on my last BMB mentioned she used magnesium oil. When I was diligent about using it, seemed to work for me. And it aids in sleep which is a bonus.

I've also found that a can of Coke with the Tylenol can sometimes help. It's still brutal though. I had the best relief when I saw a chiropractor and massage therapist through my first and second pregnancies. I was able to go during my lunch hour, but now that I'm a stay at home mom, I just don't know how I can swing appts with my two girls.

I really miss my migraine meds. It's so hard to function when one hits.

  • I was mostly migraine free for a couple years before my last pregnancy, and then they came back. My doctor gave me magnesium supplements, and they stopped. Totally safe, and worth a try!
  • There's a product called Cefaly that my friend uses.  You need a prescription for it, but it's safe during pregnancy.  It's a migraine headband that relaxes a nerve that causes migraines.

  • My OB just wrote me a prescription for Fioricet today because I have had migraines on and off for the last week. I agree, Tylenol won't touch it! Hopefully this will provide me with some relief!
  • JessicaC0203  I would love to read some articles if you don't mind sharing.

AGM0616  I've never heard of either supplement being used to treat migraines, but I am definitely going to check them out.
