2nd Trimester

severe heartburn

Hi everyone. I turned 14 weeks today. FTM. Nausea finally faded away but bought it's BFF ' heartburn' to the party.. it's very bad and actually gets worse as the day progresses. Even a simple toast aggravates it. Milk or yogurt and ice cream seems to help but the relief doesn't last long. I have tried tums and Zantac 150 but the same result. I will really appreciate any home remedies that have worked for other ladies and gives a long term relief.. thanks for your suggestions. .

Re: severe heartburn

  • My doctor prescribed me Zantac 150 twice a day (because they recommend a prescription for long term use). If I miss a single dose (say at night) I'm breathing fire and will vomit up everything. Gaviscon helped until I saw the doctor.

Sleep on your left side-it keeps the acid from easily being able to go up your throat. Also being propped up (I find around a 45 degree angle works best for me). Until I got it under control I stuck to the BRAT diet (I have a history ulcers). Occasionally I will have a strong tums or two doing the day.

  • Zantac 150 as a preventative every day and sleeping/lying on your left should help.

  • I have heartburn and nothing helps! I've tried everything, and it's only gotten worst as my pregnancy has progressed. Ah the joys.
  • I slept upright my first pregnancy, for 41 weeks and vowed not to do it again. This pregnancy, I am taking 20mg of generic store heartburn meds (fomatidine), twice a day. One in the afternoon (when it starts appearing) and another before bed.

  • Try something like Prilosec or nexium. I've had a condition with excessive stomach acid before DS1 and had to start on Prilosec every day with him and continue forever. With this baby even the Prilosec wasn't working so I switched to nexium. Now at 24 weeks I take a Zantac and nexium each morning with an extra Zantac or tums sometimes. For me a lot of it is diet so fatty foods and gluten trigger the most, sometimes spicy sometimes not. Of course the first two things are what I want to eat the most of (carbs and more cheese please).

If you don't want to go the drug route try a low carb diet - when I was a low carb like Atkins diet eater I had the least amount of heartburn.
  • A friend told me about a licorice powder at vitamin cottage called peplic, I am going to ask my doctor if it's okay to take. She also told me a half teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of water is instant relief. The thought of either of these makes me want to vomit but I literally cannot take this heart burn anymore and I do t want another Rx.
  • My midwife suggested papaya pills and they were awesome! Worked within minutes.
  • Ranitidine
You can get it over the counter, works great for me and was approved by my ob.

  • @avalentine81 baking soda apparently works great but is not advised for pregnant women.
