I am fairly sure that this is the list that we have narrowed it down to. Middle name will be Joseph. I am fine with the way they all sound with my last name. We have a daughter, her name is Oona. I got the Irish name, now it's SO's turn. :)

Re: Italian Boy Name

  • I think Enzo and Nico sound too much like NNs. Suggesting Lorenzo because I love that name!

  • I agree they're nicknamey. I'd do Lorenzo or Nicolas.

I have a Nico and love it. Mo one ever asks if it is short for something else. His middle name is Joseph!!!

  • I love the name Enzo. If our last name didn't end in "o" I would probably try to browbeat DH into using it :)
  • I think oona & enzo sound awesome together.

  • Couldn't vote for nico.
    Nicholas Joseph is great!

  • I like enzo and nico. The concern with nico is that many may pronounce it nick-o, rather than the Italian pronunciation

  • I don't love Nico or Enzo, but Lorenzo is awesome. Fiorello is a lot of name, but it's kind of amazing too.

  • You could also do Vincenzo and NN Enzo.  That said, my coworker just named her son Enzo, and I like it by itself, too.  My
nephew is Nico (short for Nikolai), so I am also partial to that name.

    Me too, btw.

Nico just makes me think of the Velvet Underground.

I chose Fiorello because it's just epic. (I'm not Italian. So basically it makes me think vaguely of opera)
  • Thank you all for the input! SO now says he wants to just use Joseph as a first name. He's driving me nuts!!!
  • Enzo to me is simply a nickname for Vincenzo or Lorenzo.

Living in Italy, I only ever heard Nico used as a dog's name, so for me the association is strong. However, I think it could work as a nickname and I've met a couple human Nico's in the meantime too. Nicholas is the obvious choice, but not really Italian and might get shortened to Nick instead. The Italian Nicola would be an option, but might be too feminine for English usage. Enrico maybe?

There's a very popular comedian in Italy whose stage (and real first) name is Fiorello. He goes by Fiore, which means flower. Many Italians have a very positive association with this name, though it is quite distinctive. My favorite from your choices though.

If your DH is suddenly advocating for Joseph but wants a nod to (I assume) his Italian heritage, why not Giuseppe? The Italian nickname would be Beppe.

    Josephino!

Sorry.. You got me started now.

I was going to suggest that. My H totally plugged for this name but despite our Italian surname, our family isn't really all that Italian and I'm not prepared to take the plunge. It's a cool-sounding name though, and the nickname is both cool and distinctive.
