Twin Paranoia

Anybody else starting to worry about the possibility of twins? I am a twin, I have twin little brothers, I have twins (fraternal AND identical) all over on both sides of my family, it does NOT skip a generation by the way, and now I'm beginning to wonder if I'll dodge that bullet this go around!

Any mom's of multiples out there? Did you "just know" or was it a surprise?

Re: Twin Paranoia

  • Sorry, I don't have any personal experience to offer but I am worried about this too! Twins are all over my family. Cousins, nieces, grandma's, ect. Do you know what your levels are like? According to betabase, my levels are higher than the avergage twin pregnancy, eek! I was also taking lots of folic acid starting a few weeks before getting pregnant and I hear that increases you likelyhood as well. When is your first US? Mine isn't scheduled until March 7, I will be 10 weeks by then and its seems sooo far away

  • No twins in my family, but since i already have 3 under 5 I'm terrified. And I have a friend who had 3 kids, then when her youngest was 6 months old she got pregnant with twins.

  • DH is scared we will have twins! But it took us 14 months to get our BFP, so we'l take whatever we get at this point :) I'm a fraternal twin (although my twin was miscarried) and indentical twins run in my family (uncles, cousins, etc.)

Want to hear something terrifying? Lol DH's friend is an identical twin. They had 1 child, then a set of twins and now they're pregnant AGAIN with twins! I don't think they were TTC this last pregnancy either. All under the age of 5. The twins are only 6 months.

Wow that is a lot of twins!!
    *trigger warning*
My mom m/c twins at like 5 weeks, so I feel like there's always that. My dad's cousin had twins. But that's about it for our family. Definitely have twin paranoia though because I feel my symptoms are possibly worse this time, and I'm overanalyzing everything. It would be a CRAZY ride, but I've always thought it would be kinda cool to have twins.

  • I am the girl of a fraternal boy/girl twin set. My bio mother was the a member of a twin set. My grandmother was a member of a twin set. I've only had singletons so far, so we might get twins just based on genetic factors. That and FF switched O dates on me. I wondered if that meant I could have ovulated twice? Only one way to know, ultrasound on 2/26.

  • Twins run in my mom's family. My cousin is pregnant with twin girls (due in March) right now.. Everyone we've told that we are expecting, has said, "WHAT IF IT"S TWINS?!?" I'm just like hold up! I wold be happy either way but would freak out just a tiny bit.

  • My mom is a twin, so I've been prepared for the possibility. My brother has 2 sets of fraternal twins. I know that my mom's genes had no bearing on that, but at least I know what to expect! Honestly, I'm hoping for twins. I've always wanted 2 kids, and my age makes it harder to imagine going thru another ttc and pregnancy. I'll be happy as long as I get a healthy child though.
  • DH wants twins so badly, haha. They are all over his family but there are none in mine so I'm not banking on it. I have a friend whose daughter just turned 1 and she's 30wks pregnant with twin girls!

  • @PrimRoseMama ok now I'm paranoid! FF did that to me too this cycle lol! But I had BFN at 11dpo first (before it switched to 7dpo) so maybe it didn't take until the second go around haha

  • We tried so hard to get pregnant, we would be delighted with twins! My hcg was off the charts high and my TSH went all wonky, so it's a possibility. Twins run in my dads family, I'm tall and also AMA, so it's possible. We find out the 25th!

  • No twins on either side, so not worried about it. But since this is our first pregnancy, we would prefer a single child first. I would be thrilled to have twins later. Whatever we are blessed with, we will be happy though.
  • I would flip the eff out if it was twins. I have three kids already and already feel crazy for adding a fourth. Knowing how hard just one baby is adds to the panic. I was nursing at the time I conceived which I think can increase your odds, but luckily no twins in my family.

I always LOL when the spouse or male partner wants twins because I'm like, "sure, you're not the one going through the high risk pregnancy. Of course you want twins." I feel the same way when a husband keeps after his wife to keep having kids when she feels like she is done. I'm all about honoring dads wishes and their feelings are important too (as are non-gestational-carriers in same sex partnerships between women). I just figure if your organs aren't the one doing the heavy lifting (literally) that its a tall order.

  • @kmolleltz - LOL. My DH really wants twins too. He keeps making comments like, "Take care of the 3 of you" when I leave for work. And I'm totally with @PrimRoseMama - I keep telling him, "You're not the one that would have to carry two babies inside of your body!" When we were doing fertility treatments (which is a higher risk for multiples), DH would always get excited about the possibility. This was a natural BFP, so our chances are less. My mom is an identical twin. I've always heard that it's fraternal twins that are genetic though, not identical. So theoretically, the likelihood of me having twins would be the same as someone with no history of twins in their family.

I would definitely freak out if it were twins. Paying for one baby is going to be plenty (I was shocked to learn how much day cares are!). Obviously, I will be so grateful, but it will take me some time to get used to...

  • DH is an identical twin and I'm sure he wouldn't mind it but also hasn't brought it up, even when I was pregnant with our DD. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that I would love to have twins but it probably won't happen.  ;)

  • I agree with everybody who says finances are your concern, that is absolutely my biggest one. DH and I both have a kiddo from our previous marriages and one together excluding the new bean and we are in a 3 bedroom house, he's the breadwinner and I go to school so the thought of twins right now is scary! Not that we couldn't handle it and wouldn't be grateful for the little beauties but DAAAAANG, talk about MAJOR changes.

I think his thing is mostly cultural. Here in Tanzania, often the mother is left with the child(ren) and the father's role is limited, esp in the first year or two. Essentially he's worried I'm going to "hog" the baby and he won't get any time with them... hahah

  • My husband is an identical twin, so he wants twins BAD. Triplets run in my family plus I was on fertility meds that increase your chances of multiples by 10%. So he's keeping his fingers crossed. Plus I got yesterday's beta results this morning (5186, up from 856 on Friday) and he's convinced that jump means twins. Lol. I'm still well within normal beta range tho, so I told him to calm down.

    *Loss mentioned*
I've had 3 losses and this will be my last pregnancy regardless of what happens, so I would be thrilled with twins. But I think I'd still prefer just one. Lol

  • On my mom's side of the family let there is 15 sets of twins. Most are fraternal. My cousin has twin 13 year olds.
Ourfriends keep joking it is twins with us. Since this is baby number 3....I hope not!

  • My great-grandmother on my mom's side had three sets of twins, but there haven't been any in my family since. Thing is - every single dream I have ever had about being pregnant while with DH - even when we were just dating, was always twins. Not that I put much faith in dreams, but I am a little frightened of our sonogram next week. I am a smaller person and I don't get FMLA until like 5-6 weeks before the DD.

  • My husband is an identical twin, and his cousins are a set of fraternal twins.  My mom has a set of twins on either side of my grandparents.  Horrified to think of twins, but it would also be awesome!  Everyone has asked "is it twins?" (like I could know at 6 weeks...), and everything I see is about twins -- all posts I come across, tv shows, movies, everyone I talk to!
