Being sick and pregnant is a cruel joke

Being sick is bad enough, but not being able to take anything is awful. I have the worst sore throat and I haven't been able to sleep all night because of it. Don't get me wrong, I am so happy for the reason I can't take anything, but I feel like crap right now :(

Re: Being sick and pregnant is a cruel joke

  • Aw I'm sorry you're not feeling well! I'm also getting a killer sore throat/beginning of a cold. Have you tried gargling with warm salt water or seeing if preggy pops or other hard candy help?

  • I'm with you. I called in sick today, but I still have to go in to finish sub plans. I just want hot potato soup and Netflix in my bed!

  • Oatmeal with cinnamon always helped my throat feel better! Cinnamon jolly ranchers, hot sauces, just about anything spicy. Soup soup soup and warm salt water like PP said. I was also told I could use the throat spray if I needed to just to try to avoid swallowing it.
  • I definitely understand.  I am so congested that I woke up three times last night because I couldn't breathe through my nose and my throat was irritated.  I can't tell you how many times I've sneezed today.  I think I'm joing to make a trip to the pharmacy today to find something for this mess.  A friend of mine gave me the list of safe for pregnancy meds her dr gave her.  I'll use that as my guide.

  • So sorry! Hope you get to feeling better soon
  • yeah it sucks, i'm trying to decide if I have typhoid fever or just wonky pregnancy symptoms. I've had typhoid before and so I know what to expect but last time I wasn't pregnant so who knows... probably going to go get a blood test in the next couple days.

  • Thanks ladies. I'm sitting waiting at the miniute clinic about this sore throat. I was headed out my front door and fell down 2 steps. Now I'm terrified something will happen to the baby. Today is not my day.

  • I'm sorry! We've been going through some kind of crud in our house for weeks. I found out I was pregnant and I can't take any of the "good stuff".

What has really helped me are a couple of things:

1.) Salt water gargle: as hot as you can stand without burning yourself, and as salty as you can stand without puking. Gargle a mouthful at a time for about 20-30 seconds. Spit, rinse with regular water and repeat. Do about 3 times in the morning and at night. That can disinfect the throat and clear mucus that can inflame the tissues back there.

2.) Gargle with regular water after eating.
3.) Hot water with honey: its amazing for sore throat and sinus issues. You can add lemon if you choose, but if your throat hurts it can be painful.

4.) Saline spray after you shower and after you gargle in the morning. It can help with the drainage cruds.
5.) Altoids!!! They are great for morning sickness and the cool peppermint can soothe your throat. Double win!
Warning though: if you have heart burn this early peppermint can aggrevate it.

And I'm sure you know, but drink all the water you can stand. By the time you get to 40 weeks and then nursing etc. you will be so sick of water that you want to die, but drinking copious amounts can only help you.

You can take tylenol, so I would do the minimum dose (one pill) every 4-6 hours. When in doubt call your OB and ask them. They can tell you safe ways to find relief. Also, if you spike a fever you need to be checked for strep. That can get nasty.

@ktcakes87 : baby has TONS of cushion in there. Lots. I fell at 16 weeks (it was a BAD fall) when I was pregnant with DD and I was sure I did something horrible. The midwife and OB reassured me that it takes major trauma (think high speed MVA or severe beating, fall from a high place) to cause problems for a baby in utero.

If you are concerned, you can call your OB and ask. However, depending on how far along you are they can't really "check" to see if anything is going on anyway. So for now please take my reassurance that the fall is less likely to hurt baby.

Also, even if you have strep and fever-- the human race is very resilient and hardy. We wouldn't have a population problem if babies and pregnant women were this fragile. Hang in there! Thinking of you.

  • @PrimRoseMama thanks for the reassuring words. I called my midwives office right after it happened. The lady was not at all reassuring. She just told me to watch for spotting and cramps and was like "there's nothing we can do for you". I didn't like her tone. I'm sure everything is fine, but I worry so much about everything.

I really enjoyed this last paragraph.  It's a good reminder for me to chill.

I do this for my kidneys. Its nasty as all get out. For real, so foul. However, it does seem to work. But dilute it or yo will vomit.

@ktcakes87 : I'm sorry the lady over the phone wasn't very gentle with her tone. That's not helpful when you are worried. I imagine she gets a ton of calls from worried pregnants about little things. However, its not acceptable to act like someone is bothering you. That's what the phone is for. Anywho, truthfully, until about 14-16 weeks there really isn't anything the doctor's office can do for you except advise hydration, tylenol for pain and keep a watch out for spotting. That's the truth, but it doesn't mean she has to put it in a way that makes you feel bad. I'm all about some tough love and telling someone straight, but when someone is worried about their growing baby tact is everything.

Add me to the sick and miserable list. I woke up yesterday with my sinuses completely clogged, and today I'm all about coughing so hard I gag and throw up, constantly popping my ears, and my head feels like its detached from my body. I called the advice nurse and she gave me a list of baby-safe stuff to take, and I'm drinking a green juice to hopefully help. I told H I would clean the house if I feel better, but let's be honest... I'm going to binge-watch HGTV, eat Girl Scout Cookies and be lazy all day today.

I hope you all feel better soon!

ETA: like my first pregnancy, my gag reflexes are out of control. Everything is making me gag. Blowing my nose, brushing my teeth. Difference is, this didn't start until about 10 weeks. *sob*
