Pacifier for Breastfed Baby

My newborn is 2.5 weeks old and the problem we are having is that he is using my breast to comfort suck constantly, but because I have an oversupply and overactive letdown he is getting way more milk than he wants and he constantly pulls off screaming only to reattach a minute later and the process repeats. I have tried offering a pacifier but he just isn't having it. Have any of you had luck giving a pacifier to a breastfed baby who didn't want it at first?

My little one I didn't like his binky at first either. I was told by a nurse to offer it to him by putting it in part way and slightly pressing it on the roof of his mouth until he starts sucking. I don't know why it works but it did for my LO. He was about two weeks old when he started taking one.

  • I was having the exact same problem. My grandma was able to get her to take it somehow...I was in the shower and I came out to her with a binky magically in her mouth. She said she put it in her mouth and just kind of gently held it there for a bit. I know if you touch their soft palette in their mouth it triggers the sucking instinct. Maybe you need a different shape binky?

My guy didn't want to take one at first either, and was doing the same as you described. I had three kinds to try, and he eventually took one of them at around 3 weeks. Now I use it to help figure out if he is truly hungry or wants comfort. I don't mind him nursing for comfort, but it helps to know if his rooting is for nourishment or not.

ETA: We use the MAM pacifiers as well. He will not take the soothies or Avent pacifiers.

  • My baby is breast fed too, will be 5 weeks tomorrow and screams like we're killing him if we attempt a pacifier! I realize this is not helpful at all but I hope you have better luck than me! I plan to try other kinds I have hear that's helpful :)
  • I am breast feeding as well.  My LO is 5 weeks and uses a pacifier.  He didn't take to it right away at first but likes it now.

  • You may have to try different pacifiers with different shaped nipples.  At first we tried the soothies (like the ones they give you in the hospital - straight nipple) and he didn't like it at all.  I think it was too big for him.  So then we got some nuk ones as a gift, the level 1 size, and they are literally the only ones he takes.  We just ordered five more on Amazon!! Searching for two pacifiers all day is exhausting!  I've also heard that the dr Browns pacifiers are awesome and help with colic.  We ordered some of those too, and they are the same shape as the nuk ones.  Good luck mama!
  • My breastfed baby likes the MAM pacifiers. Maybe you could try those.
  • We use the 0-2 month avent and mam pacis. He hates anything else. (Even the soothies!)

  • We use Mam too, it's all he'll take, same with Mam bottles for his supplementing.
I second previous comments about triggering the sucking reflex by nudging the roof of the mouth, my LC taught me that trick.

Good luck, we found our paci a game changer at first! Now he rarely needs it.
  • My daughter doesn't take a paci from me, but will take either MAM, Avent, or Nuk from someone else depending on her mood.

  • Nuk pacifier is what mine takes, though she is hesitant and gags sometimes.
  • My LO would only take our finger as a soother. Now she'll take the Aventi. I find if I stick my finger in a little she's more likely to take it.

We also find that running water soothes her!  Every time she has a melt down we stand by the kitchen sink and run the water and she stops!  It's crazy. We've tried white noise apps on our phone but it doesn't work as well!  We'll give her a binkie once she starts to calm down.
  • We use a nuk also
  • I'm ebf and my lo refused at dummy's I've tried and she is now 5 weeks. Some just don't like them no matter what tricks you use.
  • Thanks everyone! We tried the soothie and gumdrop first since they came from the hospital. He didn't like them. So I went out and bought nuk 0-2 month and mam 0-6 month. The Mam were the only ones that he kept in his mouth for more than like 30 seconds but that was about it. I'm hoping he takes to it eventually because watching him get upset with trying to comfort nurse is breaking my heart!
