June 2016 Moms

Any twin mamas out there to help me?

I am 23 weeks pregnant with twins. Boy and girl!! Thank goodness for being over halfway done! But reading online (I know, bad to do) has me concerned about the length of stay in NICU if they come a bit early. Any twin mamas out there with some insight? When were your twins born and how did they do at that gestational age? Thank you in advance!

  • Great question, im also expecting boy/girl twins in june too and curious on the responses on this.

Also does your hospital where you are planning to deliver have a nicu?

  • We definitely have some twin mamas to be (and maybe some who already have twins?) but you might get more specific/numerous answers on the Multiples board if you post there too. :) GL and Congrats on your LOs!
  • I'm having triplets so a little different but my dr said on average they will stay until their due date.  It can really vary, though.
DS 9/2/13 was a BFP from an IUI!
Triplets due 6/29/16 also from an IUI!

The average twin birth is 35 weeks. I had my growth restricted mono di girls at 33 weeks, they were the size of 29/ 30 weekers. My girls stayed for 21 days but the Drs had told us to expect about a month stay. Most hospitals will not release a baby before 36 weeks gestation. Just take it all in stride. NICU time was actually a surprisingly rewarding time for us as we learned to care for our tiny babies and developed a close bond with the nurses helping us care for our girls.

ETA: my girls did great once they were born, much better than they were doing in utero. Most babies at this gestation are feeders and growers and require being hooked to monitors due to frequent Bradycardia and tachycardia episodes, they also need 20-22 hours of sleep in a very dark environment to help them finish their brain development.

I also suggest you check out the FB group Twinipedia as they have about 5,000 twin mommies from around the world. I wish I knew that group existed when I was preggo with my girls.
  • I think @theatremandy has twins so she could be a good one to ask.

My girls were delivered at 34 weeks because of pre-e.
Both could breathe on their own. Baby b (and the smaller of the two) was there for 14 days, baby a was there for 18 days. So they were both home around the 36 week mark.  I had to go out and buy new car seats because they were below the accepted weight limit for the ones I had!
They had to stay until they could regulate their own body temperature and eat without a nasal feeding tube for 24 hours (preemies usually don't have enough fat in their cheeks to suck hard, baby a would fall asleep while eating).
And yes, I delivered at a hospital with a nicu, but I live in a large urban area with three hospitals.
