Ginger...

Is it better for a child named Ginger to be red headed or not?

Re: Ginger...

  • Hunh.

I don’t know.  This might be Schrodinger's Ginger.

If your daughter may be a redhead, I think it's a bad idea to name her Ginger IMHO.

  • Is this a legitimate question?

  • I have a pretty good chance of having a red headed child and need to figure out whether I should keep this name on the list or scrap it.

    And yes, very Schrodinger.
  • I don't think you should name your daughter Ginger if she's a red head.

  • Please do not name your child Ginger if she's a red head (opinion of someone who is a red head).

I would avoid Ginger on a redhead.  Maybe you could go with a full name like Virginia or Ginevra and use Ginger as a nickname if she isn't a redhead.
  • As a redhead, I would be so sad if my mom named me Ginger.

  • Just skip that name altogether.
  • As a redhead, I would not like to be named Ginger... Or Scarlett, or Ruby, or any other "red" name, haha!

  • I'm not considering the following names, but would the same logic apply about naming a baby April who is born in the month of April? Or a June June? Or a summer Summer?
    I'm thinking so.
  • I'm not a fan of the name in general.

    Not even close
first of all the months aren't used as NN's for groups of people.  when you walk up to a person they diont know what moth you are born in, unlike having red hair.
june could be born in may, summer could be born in november, etc...a red head is a red head,.

  • Red head here - would have been pissed if my parents named me ginger.  That sounds like an absolute nightmare to me.
  • Maybe use Virginia, nn Ginny.  We have a few doggies in our extended family.  Bet you can guess their color from their names:  Ruby, Shadow, Rusty, and Maizie.  Wouldn't do that to a child.

  • I would probably avoid the name just on the chance that they would be a redhead. Seems like setting them up for unwelcome comments.

  • As the mother of a red head, please do not name your child Ginger. You are setting them up for some very unwelcome teasing and a lot of jokes as they get older.

I know a redheaded Ginger, and she HATES her name. It wasn't done on purpose though, as neither of her parents have red hair, and none of the other family members did either. They found out that bald grandpa (after Ginger was born and it was discovered that she was a redhead), had some red in his hair. But their other two kids are brunettes. So I am sure they were assuming that she would be a brunette named Ginger.

ETA: Ginger was as bald as a que ball when she was born, so they really didn't know that she was even a redhead until she was almost a year old and her hair started coming in.

  • As a redhead myself I have to ask you to reconsider. It's hard enough as it is being a redheaded little kid as all you want to do is blend in and most people don't have red hair. I know someone else mentioned avoiding Scarlett and Ruby, I agree. I would also avoid Lucy (Lucille Ball) and Wendy (the fast food chain).
  • The Ginger I know has naturally brown hair and dyes it dark red. So there's that.
  • Oh no, I feel like she would get picked on a lot as a child.
