March 2016 Moms

question for not first time moms

Did you all notice when you lost your mucus plug. Is it possible to never notice it and then randomly one day you just went into labor, not knowing you lost your plug?

Yes definitely. Mucous plugs are not a reliable indicator of imminent labor. Some people see theirs and some never do. Some people lose theirs little by little over time so it's not noticable.
Bloody show with contractions or your water breaking are better indicators.

  • I was suspicious I lost mine with DS, but it's honestly hard to tell with all of the bodily fluids during pregnancy. I went into labor a week later. So yes, not only possible but probably pretty normal. But again, losing your mucus plug does not guarantee that labor is going to start anytime soon.
    It's a boy! Born 42 weeks, 2 days.

  • I lost mine (it was very obvious- larger glob of mucus like fluid with strings of blood) 7 days before my water broke. I had went into my weekly appt the day before i went into labor and the Dr (she said there was no way i could have lost it and not been in labor) begrudgingly checked my cervix and said everything was completely closed and thick. Water broke he following night on day 7. So in my experience i don't feel much weight should be put on losing the plug and going into labor.

  • I didn't lose mine until I was admitted to the hospital and in active labor and it was grossly noticible haha!

  • I lost mine and it was very obvious. It was a large glob of goo basically! Lol but I didn't go into labor until a week later.
  • 3 births so far I have never noticed even a piece of mucus plug. Either it came out with baby or it came out in tiny pieces I never saw. Two of my babies my water broke spontaneously in the middle of the night.

  • Didn't notice it either. I was in active labor and my OB broke my water in the hospital to expedite the process, maybe that's why I never saw it...
  • If you lose yours and you notice it, you can lose it in pieces or whole and they do regenerate so losing it doesn't really mean anything.

  • It is possible. Most of the moms I know say they lost theirs about 3-7 days before labor and definitely noticed it. That is just my small friend group who feel comfortable talking about these things though! I lost mine 48 hours before my first big contraction. Finally gave birth via c-section 48 hours after that. I lost it over about 6 hours in pieces.
  • Yup I don't ever remember seeing mine. I may have seen something the night I went into labor but ?
    6 & 2 year old, 2 losses
  • With my first. ... I remember losing it and it was one big glob of gross.... I had him about a week later even though OB assured me it was too early and it wasn't possible to be in labor :) as I was only 35w4d
With my twins and my 3 yr old I don't recall losing it....

  • Never saw it with my first. Still have no clue what that thing looks like. From everyone's descriptions, I hope to never find out :)

  • My best comparison is it looks like a giant slug.  It's so gross.  And to think, you have a slug keeping you high and tight for 40 weeks - nutso!

  • I had some mucus in the shower the day before my first was born. I told hubby it was just a matter of time.  Real contractions started about 12-14 hours later and my water broke about 24 hours after I noticed the mucus.

    ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

Birth/pregnancy is NOT a beautiful thing. Mucus plugs and bloody shows, they sure don't make THOSE known details for FTMs!

There's a reason I don't share some details with my husband.  I want to keep some things a beautiful mystery so he'll still look at me the same way :D

  • I've lost mine twice.  First came out right before labor started.  It looked much like an amber colored glob of rubber cement.  This time (I was in preterm labor) it came out in teeny pieces at first and then in a big glob later that day.  Again the amber colored rubber cement.  It was pretty unmistakable.

My husband thinks that the darken nipples are gross.  He didn't exactly say it that way but I knew what he meant. I think he was secretly happy that they went back to somewhat like before when I was done breastfeeding.
  • It's noticeable. My labors start out long and slow which often include loosing little bits of the mucus plug at a time over the course of a few days. So I never got the one huge slug thing. But it was still like "oh, yep, there's some mucus plug" every time.

Haha! My husband said it exactly that way!!! I gently informed him (aka didn't get too pissy lol) that they get dark and bigger so the baby, who can only see a few inches in front of his face, can see where to get his food and these "gross nipples" will be providing his son with everything he needs the first few months. He said "oh, okay" and hasn't made the comment since. Men.
  • With my first I didn't get to experience that since I was induced and then had an emergency C-section.  I am also planning on having another C-section with this pregnancy.
  • I didn't notice it with any of the 3 that I had previously.
