Could be either? Stupid question but are you making sure his penis is down every time you put a new diaper on? My first son used to explode #2 out of the diaper and I usually found that that meant we needed to move up to the next size.
Both? We only use Pampers Swaddlers and when ds1 would pee through consistently we would go up a size. DS2 has used Huggies and they were always leaking.

I'm not. Maybe I should and see if that makes a difference. He's currently in size 1. I hope we don't need to jump to size 2 already?!?!
What brand are you using? I would make sure his penis is down when you put a new diaper on. When he soaks through, is the diaper saturated or just a little wet? My guy likes to hold his bladder and floods his diaper. We use cloth mostly, but have had success with Seventh Generation diapers when we use disposables.
How often are you changing him? If you're going too long between changings and you have a heavy wetter, that could be why he's peering through the diaper.
Where are the leaks occurring and are the diapers full or just leaking with any pee at all? What brand are you using? You could post a photo of you want and we could tell you if it seems to fit poorly
It could be the brand of diapers, the size, how your putting them on, or how frequently your changing him. There are a lot of reasons. Make sure they are on right, change him more often and if that doesn't help most of the time going up a size works.
I have to unfold the diaper very meticulously before I put it on him. I make sure the tabs are unfolded correctly, the leg openings are not bunched in and are pulled outward enough and that his penis is aimed down, so he doesn't shoot it up and out of the diaper. I also pull the diaper up in the back, once it's secured, just to make sure it's nice and snug fitting.
DS doesn't really enjoy diaper changes at all, so I find it's best for me to get it all set up first, so when I do check to make sure there are no gaps and it's not to loose, he doesn't go into hysterics on me.
Laughing so hard about that penis placement. I have a girl and that would've never crossed my mind!!
I thought my daughter was growing out of her newborn diapers because they seemed snug so I switched her to a size 1. I found that it leaks really bad when they are just slightly too big! And I'm with PP's, Huggies are terrible.
We had this issue for the first week because no one told us about pointing his penis down! I'd mainly only changed girl diapers in the past and hubby changed his first diaper in the hospital. As SOON as we started pointing him in the right direction...problem solved!
I'm totally laughing at this. I got peed on twice yesterday while I was holding him and I never thought about how the penis is positioned. Here's to making sure it's down and hoping for less outfit changes for mamma!
I'm changing as soon as he wakes up. Right now I'm using some random brand (used for diaper cake, I have no idea what brand?) and I wonder if it's these diapers. It almost seems like it's coming out of the sides though. trying out Huggies this week. (Bought a huge pack on Amazon prime) I hope it's not these diapers too.
Random or no name brands always leak on me. Pampers swaddlers are good and we are using Huggies at the moment because we are between sizes and huggies legs are slightly wider. Like previous posters said for boys the penis needs to be tucked down and the legs flaps out. If they are bunched in pee and poops will for sure sneak out.

This! I told the nurse at the hospital straight up for his first changing that I had no clue what I was doing. And especially after DS was circumcised we made sure it was down and not too exposed to pee.
Point the penis down!! With my first son no one advised to do so and he went through many outfits especially at night. It was very tiring changing pj's every feeding and diaper change.
I'm currently having this problem.. Yesterday I got peed on three times...consecutively... I gave up changing my clothes... It shoots out the side... Like seriously?!
im beginning to think we need to change sizes. Hes still in newborn diapers at 7weeks.. They fit, his skin doesn't look irritated from small diapers but he's starting to leak out...
So- how do you know if you need to change sizes? I don't want to change sizes and have a bigger mess than what I have now..
I moved up from newborn to size 1 at 5 days! We started with a cheapie store brand, which still leaked but now are using Huggies and no issues. (Minus that massive poop blowout yesterday). I'd say try size 1 and see if that makes a difference.

I would try changing more frequently or sizing up. If you get the bigger size and it doesn't solve your issue, at least you can save them for when he gets bigger.
My sister (two kids 5 and 2) told me if you have 3 or more leaks in a row, it's time for the next size. Sure enough, LO peed through 3 diapers, put her in size 1, and no more leaking. The size 1 looked huge on her, but it seemed they were actually right.

We went to size 1 when DS was about 10 days. He had one blowout straight up his back so I figured there wasn't enough rise in the back to contain his poo. That's fixed the problem. We've had 2 poop leaks since then with disposables, both after DH changed him. I'm 99% sure he just didn't put the diaper on tight enough! We spend our days in cloth when at home and have had 100% success (knock on wood)!
That's part of the reason I haven't switched yet. When SO changes the diapers no leaks (except one) when I change them I get peed on- I swear I put them on right (exhausted sigh)
i feel LO is a little small though. His newborn clothes still fit- there are a few outfits that are starting to fit snugly but I put him in 0-3 month clothes tody and he was swimming in extra fabric :-/
ill give ive it a few more days to get my diaper changing skills in line - if not then I'll change up sizes (even though SO bought a new pack of diapers today :-/ )
@carlyhammond I've had a few blow outs myself but from lack of putting the diaper on correctly and being lazy and quick about it......what I make sure I do every time I change after I get them strapped on I go along each side and make sure to pull the sides out so they aren't bunched up which then causes leaks. When doing that make sure you get the inside where the elastic is too. It helps a ton. Hopefully that might help you a bit!
@carlyhammond, DS is 6 weeks and still fit in some newborn clothes with sposies! It's amazing how different the brands fit! I put him in 0-3 with cloth because of his fluffy butt, but they are still a tad long. Don't fret!! And you can exchange that unopened pack of diapers for the next size up without a problem I've done it a couple times myself!

How much does your LO weigh? I find the weight recommendations on my diapers fairly accurate. My LO was 8lbs at birth and only lasted in newborn diapers for a week or so, and the Pampers weight recommendation for newborn diapers is 5-8lbs. We put him in size 1, and they looked ridiculous but we no longer had leaks. The key is also in technique as well though. You can't just unfold the diaper and plop it on, you have to 'fluff' it and make sure the leg elastics are pulled away from the diaper so they make better contact with LO's legs. Also, penis placement is key for boys!!
Pull the front tabs up over his thighs and pull the sticky tabs taut on him. That made all the difference for us. The penis placement hasn't made a difference.

last check up was 10lbs
we are using Huggies are good up to 10lbs so it's probably almost time to change.
So far no leaks yesterday and today! Whoo!
