This is the first year we'll be looking to deduct out of pocket ivf expenses. Had anyone had experience with this? I saved all my receipts for everything but don't really know how to advocate for us.
Hey there! Infertility tax deductions are very similar to medical expense tax deductions. Your total oop cost for the infertility must be over 10% of your adjusted gross income to be deductible. Unfortunately if you are under 10% you can't claim them...
I suggest a tax program like turbotax. It's user friendly and walks you through the steps to get the biggest refund. I know health expenses is a part of the series of questions.
******* Married Jan. 2014 Me:36 DH: 39 TTC since August 2014, Mild PCOS + uterine fibroids Myomectomy June 2015- 18 fibroids removed IVF #1, May 2016 = 32 eggs retrieved, 12 fertilized, 7 frozen, 3 PGS normal FET#2, July 2016 = one embryo transferred TRIGGER BFP! Beta = 617 Due date = 4/9/17 Delivery date = 3/20/17
Add up all your medical expenses, not just fertility expenses. You can also claim mileage for the drive to the doctor, acupuncture, co-pays, etc
I've got documentation of everything I'm claiming, but you don't have to provide it unless you get audited.
This deduction is part of your itemized deductions, so you give up your standard deduction when you itemize. If you don't have a mortgage, it may not be worthwhile to claim it. It may be worth it to hire someone to prepare your taxes, or at least get turbo tax, if you don't feel comfortable following the 1040 instructions.
Me- 39 (turning 40 in April), TTC for the first time ever (since Jan 2015), low ovarian reserve
Married 3/14/14 to my wonderful wife, but her sperm count is rather low
TTC with frozen donor sperm and science
7 IUIs, 7 BFNs. 2 IVF attempts, both cancelled and converted to IUI, both BFNs. Decided that my tired old ovaries are ready to retire. Next step- reciprocal IVF, using my wife's eggs, my uterus! fresh 5 day transfer (2 embryos) 4/17/17- BFP! Identical twins "due" 1/2/17 (but anticipated arrival sometime December)
