Postpardum care for mom

I have been stock piling a number of things, but so far nothing for myself after the birth. I was going to put this in another forum, but I figured that I would get a variety of answers and others with the same question could finds it easier this way as well.
STMs: what are the best items for aftercare? Ointments, salves, pads, breast care, care for your lady bits, general advice? Please put your preferred brands as well.
TIA!

  • What have you been stock piling if you don't mind me asking (: . Also, I used this as a guide. Found it on Pintrest. https://www.pinterest.com/pin/377317275005465870/

  • You'll probably get mesh panties, a peri bottle, Tucks pads (or something similar) and some kind of relieving spray for your lady bits from the hospital.  (Tip: they'll also give you the suction bulb for your LO from the hospital - this thing is gold, you will not find a suction bulb stronger in stores, so make sure you keep it).

For home care kit, I had Lanolin for nipples, another peri bottle (one for each bathroom is really nice), Tucks pads, lady bit spray like dermaplast (I was really swollen from all the pushing plus I had done plus the perineal tear), the biggest pads I could find with wings, and I also had some breastfeeding safe stool softeners.  You'll want to have some kind of either underwear that you don't care for (in case of leaks) for when the mesh panties run out (or if you don't like the way they feel).

You'll also be contracting still sometimes (your uterus is shrinking).  Some women make rice filled or bean filled socks to microwave and then lay along your tummy to help with the ouchies.  My sister found me this neat heat/cold pad with beads at Walgreens that I could freeze and sit on (yep, my lady bits hurt) or heat up and put on my lower abdomen.

A lot of people like taking baths after birth (or even just sitz baths - the hospital may send you home with one) and they use some mommy botanicals in them to heal.  I don't have any recommendations though.

  • I got tucks pads, nipple cream, the largest pads I could get with wings, and my breastfeeding kit came with these gel pads for when milk comes in that can either be warmed or cooled. Oh and my own toilet paper, along with a towel.

Last time I had neither of these, and I had to make a last minute store stop. My beasts were so engorged I was putting frozen peas on them. I've never used the tucks pads before, but have read they're a savior.

The hospital I'm delivering at only supplies the peri bottle and mesh panties, along with GIANT diaper sized pads.  So this time I'm coming prepared with my own preference of supplies.
  • Tucks pads, peri bottle, dermoplast, donut pillow if you tear from hospital (I second steal all the bulb syringes from the hospital because you can't find them in the store).

Lanolin and/or coconut oil for sore nipples, gel pads for the first few weeks (for sore boobs), bottled water/Gatorade and snacks for the nursery (like granola bars) - you will be thirstier than you've ever been in your life and you thought hunger during pregnancy was horrible - hunger during nursing is miles beyond that, comfy clothes.

  • Can I say a good massage?  I remember I really needed one about 2 weeks PP.  My back was pretty sore from holding the baby and it's probably caused by my not-so-good posture in general.  I finally got one about a month pp and it was the best thing ever!  If you are having a c-section though, you may have trouble laying face down.

I started losing a lot of hair about 3-4 months pp.  The good thing was that my armpit hair also didn't grow AT ALL so no shaving required.  However, I thought I was going to go bald.  The hair did come back eventually.  I heard that taking Biotin can help.  Anyone tried it before?
  • Because it is so incredibly important: PERI BOTTLES. One per bathroom that you might use.

Comfortable leggings/pajama pants. You might fit in jeans but you're not going to want anything constricting against your stitches, if you get any.

I actually recommend getting coconut oil for sore nipples instead of lanolin or similar; worked much better and you don't have to thoroughly wipe it off before every nursing session since it's safe for baby.

  • @maelic I second the coconut oil. It worked well to put some on before you start pumping to prevent milk blisters. It kind of works as a lubricant.
  • Like @maelic I was so swollen post delivery from the pushing that I had to wear DH's pj pants home.  I couldn't have anything confining near my crotch.

also if you nurse, a chiro visit can be great after a month or so to relieve the 'nursing shoulders' pain you might get.

I also found a Belly Bandit for this go around.  I had a cheap support belt from Walgreen the first time around and even that was a huge comfort because I felt so loosy goosy in my pelvis and abdomen.
  • Almost forgot...definitely breast pads.  You will be leaking all over the place when your milk does decide to come in.
