    Gestational Week: 29

Successes: after some adjustments to my medications my post meal numbers somewhat settled down early in the week. Also my a1c (not usually monitored in GD moms) came back and is still in an acceptable range, although a little elevated compared to my last test in December.

Challenges: I've been sick for the last week or so, so not much motivation to get exercise or cook healthy foods. For part of that time I was also out of town for work, which put me out of my usual food routines. Pretty much my only access to food was to whatever was serve at catered meals for three days, and limited healthy snacks were available :(  the combo of sickness and traveling made for spotty numbers the last few days.

    Gestational Week: 29
Successes: Started my second insulin (Novolog) before meals. It's going pretty good. My instructions are 1 unit for every 10g of carbs I'm going to consume. I use MyFitnessPal to keep a food diary (used if off and on for years) and it really helps a lot. Tomorrow I am meeting a nurse at the hospital to go over diabetes/insulin management so hopefully I'll get more tips. Because the diabetes is causing me to carry too much amniotic fluid and the baby is growing too much, we'll be scheduling my c-section @ 38 weeks.

    Gestational Week: 30

Successes: pretty good numbers all of this week, and did a better job of cutting down on sweets and planning food.

Challenges: I had one meal that was way high bc I gave into a craving and had a root beer. Won't do that again. Honestly, though, the bigger challenge has been low blood sugar for me. If I'm not eating every couple hours and getting enough carbs, it drops really fast and I get shaky.

@AEG84 do you test your blood sugar when you feel like it's getting low?  What kind of numbers are you seeing?

@Monicagail1I haven't, only because I've been out of the house and didn't have my test kit with me at the time. Most of my post-meal numbers are in the 80-95 range, with a few in the 100-110, and only one or two over 110. That's with me not really limiting carbs at all. On Saturday, I went a little too long without eating in the afternoon (we were at an all-day birth class and they didn't give us any breaks from 2-5pm). We ate an early dinner afterward and I had a biscuit with sweet butter, cornbread, half of a hamburger, and about a half glass of strawberry lemonade, and my glucose 2 hours after that was only 108 (I was fully expecting it to be really high with all of those carbs and especially the lemonade, which was extremely sweet). Similar thing happened yesterday before lunch - forgot to grab a snack before heading to the grocery store, and started feeling shaky. Ate a fruit leather and a banana at the store, and lunch when we got home (I don't remember what, but it wasn't low carb), and glucose less than 2 hours after that was 90.

I'm trying to at least carry a snack bar around in my purse now for moments like that. I'm pretty good during the week since I bring lots of food to work, but weekends are a bit more challenging.

@aeg84 you might want to try making sure you're pairing your carbs with enough protein and fat. That should help your blood sugar stay steady. If you're eating a lot of carbs, especially simple carbs it might be causing a quick, high spike and crash.

@Monicagail1 I generally get a pretty good mix of the 3. If anything, I tend to eat more on the protein and fat side because I ate paleo for a long time before trying to get pregnant. I didn't feel a crash after the super high-carb dinner the other night, and neither of the meals I ate before the crashes were particularly high carb (chicken salad sandwich for one, homemade breakfast burrito for the other).

    Gestational Week: 30 weeks

Successes: I've changed up my diet on my own based on research and reading what you ladies have had to do so far. I've got a GD class at the hospital where I will get my testing supplies on Thursday, and then a follow up with the GD Specialist at my OB office next Tuesday... so I have no idea about numbers so far, but I'm glad I got the appointments set up so I can get my supplies.

Challenges: Eating low carb/sugar has always given me BM problems... DH and I went on a couple of South Beach Diet kicks and every time, no matter how much fiber I ate, I always had problems! This has so far been no different, other than the fact that it causes debilitating back pain due to my scrunched up insides... yayyyyy.

Recipe/Tips: ...maybe next week after I look at the meal plan.

Questions: Wwwwhhhhhyyyyyyy????  :'( Ha ha... pity party for one here! But seriously... if your numbers are consistently good, do they ever drop the GD diagnosis, or does that mean that you are just managing with diet and exercise? And have any of you talked to your Dr about inducing early? And I'm sure they'll answer this at my class, but what happens after baby? Just...poof! You're healed?

    ETA: grammar is hard sometimes

@allaire314 I hear you on the WHYYYY?? :)  I'm pretty sure you will carry the GD "label" through this pregnancy, regardless of how good your numbers are.  It likely just means that you are successfully managing it well through diet and exercise.

As far as what happens after baby, usually GD resolves on it's own after delivery.  They may continue to check your blood sugar at the hospital until discharge.  My OB also sent me for another glucose tolerance test at about 6 weeks post partum, to ensure it had gone away, and not developed into type 2 diabetes.

They will hopefully talk about this in your class, but be aware that having GD in pregnancy does put you at higher risk for developing type 2 diabetes within the next 10-15 years.  I can attest to that.  I had GD in my first pregnancy, and developed Type 2 6 years later.  I had other risk factors as well, but GD alone is also a risk factor.  So while it may resolve after this delivery, you should still be mindful of potential impacts down the road.

@allaire314 I was told that the night before my csection to not take insulin and was also told once the baby is born, my hormones should decrease dramatically and I should not have to take insulin again. The doctor will check my levels again 6-8 weeks after birth and I can continue to monitor if I'd like but, most likely everything should revert back to pre-pregnancy.
