How many oz?

how many ounces are your little ones taking and how old are they? I am breast feeding and have left DD with my mom once and with DH once with pumped milk and over the course of about 2 hours they both gave her 5 ounces and she is 5 weeks old. That seems like way too much! Of course I can't tell when I am feeding her but wondering how your LOs are?

Re: How many oz?

  • We were told and have read that in the first month anywhere from 2-5 oz per feeding is completely normal. As long as she doesn't show signs of overeating afterward I think she should be fine with the 5.

DD usually gets about 3 oz (usually a little left but very rarely wants more too) and can eat anywhere from 1-3 hrs during the day. Some say it's important to look at the daily total as well. Doing some quick math DD probably averages 24-30 oz per day.

  • Mine varies still from 2-4oz at 8 weeks...
  • I don't think that's way to much, if DD is taking it then I would continue to give her that much. My DD is BF and then supplemented with formula and sometimes takes 4-6oz of formula after she's BF for 20mins and gets multiple let downs. I try not to stress about how much she's taking in because I did in the beginning and it consumed me.
  • I EBF but when DS does take a bottle he usually drinks 3-4 oz he's 6 weeks
  • 6 weeks and it depends on when she last ate, but with pace feeding she is usually happy with anywhere between 2-4 oz.
  • I always make a 4oz bottle and that usually satisfies him. He is 8 weeks on Wednesday.

  • My DD will be 8 weeks this week and will eat anywhere from 1-6 oz. it depends on when she last ate if she's cluster feeding all sorts of factors. I feed her as much as she wants, she will turn down a bottle if she doesn't want to eat anymore. With comfort nursing she's more likely to overeat unintentionally.
  • 8 weeks EBF however when I pump for someone else to feed him, he'll take 4 oz.
  • DS takes 4-5.5 oz and is almost 8 weeks.  He's been taking 5 oz since he was about 4 weeks old.  Or ped said take their weight and divide it by 2 and that is the maximum amount of ounces they should have at a feeding.  For example an 11 lb baby could have 5.5 oz.
  • LO is 4 weeks old and EFF. She drinks 3-4oz every 2.5-3.5 hrs. Averages 24-25oz in a 24 hr period.

  • My son is 7 weeks old and I breastfeed and supplement with formula. When I give him formula, I make 4 oz and he usually takes the whole thing and that generally seems to satisfy him. However, he had 4 oz at the nursery at the nursery at the YMCA the other day and I was told to bring more water next time because he still wanted more after drinking that. I said I guess being without me makes him extra hungry lol. (the max time to be in that nursery is 2 hours & I always breastfeed before I take him in there)
  • DD is two months and is FF. She takes 5 to 6 ounces at each feeding. 5 oz is totally normal. DD usually goes three to four hours between feedings.
  • Leo is 8 weeks old and has 5 oz every 2-3 hours (sometimes 4 hours).

  • I asked my pedi this at her 1 mo and she said babies would be taking in maybe 2-3 oz, but apparently mine is a piggy as she easily takes 4 sometimes more. She said its fine cause my LO is also a pretty good sleeper so she thinks she may eat more during feedings then sleep longer.

LO gets 3oz every feeding, and usually his feedings are every 3-4 hours. He eats about 5-6 times a day. So he gets anywhere from 15-18oz a day sometimes more. I think the most he's eaten in one day is 23. I have an app that tracks it all.  He's 7w old.
  • My LO is 5 weeks and can easily take 6 ozs in one sitting, feel like I'm always feeding him but he is a big boy
  • DS is 7 weeks and usually has 4 oz for each feeding. I know there are recommendations on how to feed a baby with a bottle that is normally breastfed. It has to do with slowing down the feeding and making it similar to breastfeeding so that the baby doesn't guzzle the bottle. Below is the link.

  • Dakota is 8 weeks old and we just went from 4 oz to 5 oz and she is eating every 3-5 hours during the day and went 6 hours the other night between feedings. My pediatrian said don't feed her before 3 hours and don't let her go over 6 but let her eat as much as she wants during each feeding as long as she is tolerating it and not showing signs of over eating.
  • DS is 7 weeks tomorrow and drinks 4oz of formula every 3-4hrs
  • Rule of thumb is 2.5 oz for each pound per 24 hours. DS is about 11.5 lbs, 6 weeks old, and eats anywhere from 2-6 oz in a one hour eating session. He's FF. I don't really know how much he's eating total, but he probably eats every two to four hours, depending on how long he naps and sleeps.

  • Thanks ladies. This makes me feel better. She is about 10.5lb so probably needing close to 4 oz per feeding so she may be taking 5 at times. I will try not to stress about it!
  • @amye02 thank you for posting that chart!  He's right on track according to it.  He gets 3 oz every feeding, though we recently started introducing formula and everyone in the house is using formula instead of offering him to me so I can BF and I can only pump 2.5 oz at a time, so my goal is to go hopefully have him eating more breast milk than formula in a day.
  • It's helpful to know that BF babies and FF babies take different amount each feeding, and that most charts are based on Formula. The amount of formula increases with age while the amount of breastmilk stays about the same from 12 weeks until solids are introduced.
So, if a FF baby follows the chart that is great, they are right where they should be. If an EBF baby follows that chart they are likely overeating.
  • I use a breast feeding chart.  It is based on only weight not on age.  My LO takes between 1-4 ounces each feeding but I make sure she takes at least what the chart suggests daily but I find she does better with less milk more often.
  • @Gingermom15 the chart I posted is from my BF group. It came from LaLeche or Kelly mom, I don't remember where the poster said. Of course there will be feedings baby wants more or less.
