Sitting in slanting position

edited February 2016 in May 2016 Moms
Hi,

I am in my 24th week. I noticed that my baby kicks more when I sit in slanting position on my bed or couch with lots of pillows supporting my back. Is it possible that it could be harmful to the baby in case the vena cava is getting pressed?

Re: Sitting in slanting position

  • I've noticed the same. Especially at night, she kicks like crazy when why slouched down on the couch like you describe. Never thought of it as being harmful?? I think it's just a position where we can feel them more!

  • I've noticed this as I'm standing up, about half way through. So kind of like you describe in a slouched or bent position. I think it's probably just you're compressed so the movements are easier to feel. I can't imagine it's harmful?
  • I just figured it's cos I'm NOT squishing her by sitting upright. Everyone always tells me they move around more when you're relaxed so that's likely all it is. Remember babies are protected by a big ball of fluid and other fun stuff so it's actually pretty hard to do damage just from the position your in.
  • I get this at night also when I'm lounging. I don't think it's harmful at all but it could force them to change their position which means we feel more movement until they're settled.

  • I haven't heard anything about it being harmful, but one of my birthing books mentions that sitting back in a reclined position makes it more likely the baby will be facing the wrong way during birth.
  • The lying flat on your back thing is what can cause trouble, but that becomes uncomfortable on its own. It's true that we want to work with gravity when it comes to baby's position, though. I try to balance out lounging with sitting cross legged and stretches where I'm on my hands and knees.

  • I always feel more when I bend over...feel like she's kicking to let me know I'm smushing her lol
  • My doc has assured me ten times to Sunday that the baby is well protected in there. Bending over, slouching, etc. is not harmful. Like @lalala2004 said, your body will "tell" you when you're doing something wrong.

Thank you all! Was just concerned I was not pressing my back vena cava nerve which might reduce nutrients and oxygen supply to baby  :)
