Huge Fear of SIDS

So I know that all you can do is what they recommend and beyond that it's out of your control but I'm just so worried. My LO is only 6 days old and I don't know how much longer my husband will deal with my worrying.
I was just wondering how some of you are coping with this fear or what you're doing to stay calm about it.

Re: Huge Fear of SIDS

  • We got a snooza.  It is a little monitor that clips to the top of baby's diaper and alarms if they don't move for a certain period of time (10, 25 or 20 seconds)
  • Loading the player...
  • I bought the Owlet. Not cheap, but worth it in my opinion. It's basically a sock that monitors her heart rate and oxygen levels. It alarms you if the heart rate/oxygen levels are too high/low and also if the sock falls off or it can't get a good reading. You can monitor it from your iPhone too from their app. It's given me a little more reassurance.
  • I second the Owlet! Idk how I would be able to sleep without having one. It reassures me to be able to look at the app in the middle of the night and make sure everything is okay - even when he's just a few feet away from me.
  • We have the owlet too and it does allow me to sleep easier - however, we had problems with it false alarming in the beginning so make sure it's on correctly otherwise your husband will want to throw it out the window like mine did!  ;)
  • @kgcnyc I know what you mean sometimes I take her too far from the base at night to warm her bottle and I'm cursing up a storm trying to get back to turn it off before my husband wakes up, lol!!
  • I also got the snuza but we haven't used it yet because it seemed in the way of her umbilical stump. It's fallen off now so I wanna use it but the clip is not that easy to get on the diaper.

Fold the top of the diaper over a little and it is way easier to get on.
  • Last night we had the snuza on and it went off scaring the crap out of me. It was on the diaper but wasn't touching her stomach. Any tips for that?
  • I bought he angel care monitor... He's in the bassinet and so I have not used it yet, but plan to.

Make sure it is all the way down on the top of the diaper.  We have only had it go off one time DD is 3 weeks old.
  • @l4rk thank you! That's what I really needed to hear. My dr recommended against all the monitors since they aren't always accurate and will likely just increase my anxiety.

If it helps, the odds of a SIDS death is roughly 0.000625%. That's 0% if you round... :-)  Just follow the guidelines and then stop worrying!
How did you find that? I swear I've googled this rate so many times and couldn't find it. Funny how we all stress so much about SIDS when the chance of it happening is so ridiculously low

Ah, sorry, my math was wrong! It's actually 0.06%. I looked up the number of SIDS deaths in the US last year, and divided it by the number of babies born last year, then (should have) multiplied by 100 for the percent. There are some flaws in pulling the data that way - the year ranges aren't an exact match - but it shares the gist.

But I actually just found CDC data that states in 2014 there were 38.7 SIDS deaths for every 100,000 live births. (I tried to copy the link here but my phone is being a POS - Google "cdc sids" and check out their Data and Statistics page.) That sounds high but actually works out to 0.039%. So, still, we are looking at really low odds.
  • Thank you for posting this!!!  I too worry about SIDS.  It tragically happened to a friend of mine's baby girl from University a couple of years ago and I worry unrealistically about this happening to my son :(.  I am a numbers girl and so those statistics absolutely will help me sleep better tonight... And probably him too so I am not touching his hand/foot in the middle of the night to get a reaction :/.
