Bad latch for bottles?

My LO had a good latch with breastfeeding, but bottles are a whole different story. She has such a bad latch that she dribbles probably half of each bottle out of the corners of her mouth. She soaks through bibs, burp cloths, and her clothes (sometimes all in the same feeding!) It makes it really challenging to figure out how much she's actually getting. We are using the Dr. Brown's anti-colic bottles, size 1 nipples. We've also tried Tommee Tippee and the little newborn nipples you screw onto the pre-made bottles. She also tends to drink so fast that she chokes herself.

Anybody else? Any ideas on how to help?

Re: Bad latch for bottles?

  • I've had the same issues with my son. We started with the Avent natural bottles and the same thing happened, he couldn't keep it in his mouth and was choking. So we tried the Avent classics and he seems to do better with those. The thing I do the most is stop him after every couple swallows. Even if he fusses, it let's him catch up with the fast flow of the milk. I've also read a lot of people recommend the Dr browns premie nipples.

  • There is an article on kelly mom about paced feeding. It sounds like it might help you.
  • We've had success with dr Browns preemie nipples as mentioned above. Hope that helps!
  • Paced feeding and having baby upright as possible while eating should help.

  • We use the wide neck Dr. Browns bottles.  DS tends to have a better latch with those.  He kept drawing in almost the entire nipple on the Options bottles and the Preemie flow began to be too slow for him.
  • Try elevating baby a little bit more. Put baby on you leg in an almost sitting position with you hand behind head and supporting neck. This will help with latch and not allow as much to Coke put sides. Also like others have said. Pace feeding a by either lowering bottle so baby isn't getting milk from nipple or take out of mouth to slow down the flow. Baby will get used to it and eat slower overtime.

photo below is a picture of what I mean. Only thing I would do different is have my leg behind baby to support rest of body. The more support baby have the better eater they will be. Baby might do better also if swaddled or arms tucked in a little so body is "organized". Some babies focus on getting body organized and not on eating and then lose from their mouth. Please pm me if u have questions or something didn't make sense I said .
  • I agree with pp about dr Browns preemie nipples. I noticed a difference when we switched lo from the level 1 to the preemie's.
  • We're using ultra preemie nipples for Dr Browns and that's helped us!
  • I'd also try other bottles as well besides just two. My LO ended up liking Mam bottles and pacifiers. I was told before the baby chooses the bottle.
