  • I'm having a hard time talking to my mom right now. Ever since we told her I was pregnant she's asked me over and over when I'm going to announce it on Facebook. Then when I told her she could finally tell some friends she kept calling it "her news". It's her first grandchild so I'm trying to be patient and understanding that she's really excited. But, just the other day she asked if I had told these two extended-family members and I when I told her I had, she didn't understand why they hadn't contacted her to congratulate her. I just kept thinking, "because it's my news!!"

DH and I decided we're going to announce it tomorrow on fb and I want to tell her that she can share the post but needs to wait a day. Otherwise she will get all the congratulations first. Even after writing that I feel like a total brat, but I live overseas and she's gotten to tell a lot of families we know in person, so I feel this is finally my way to tell everyone else.
  • We are going to tell our friends this Sunday at a superbowl get together. I am insanely nervous because our other couple friends just announced two weeks ago and are due a week before my DH and I. Her husband has been known to say rude things on occasion, and I am worried he will feel we are stealing his thunder.

  • I feel like some people have all of the early testing just so they can find out the sex of their baby without having to wait the normal 16-20 weeks. There are people who really need these tests due to family history or other medical reasons and have a hard time due to insurance not covering or whatever the reason may be. I was super close to actually freaking out on a friend because she is one of the people who only did it because insurance covered it and she couldn't wait to find out the sex. Not cool.
  • H and I agreed to start telling people about the baby when I'm 13 weeks and I'm absolutely terrified. I have no idea, I know my friends will be supportive, but for some reason I just don't want to tell anyone.

We are planning on telling next weekend, at 12 weeks. I just think it will be cool to time it with Valentine's day. But I am scared too! I guess deep down I am scared that something will go wrong right after we tell. I know our friends would be supportive if we had a MC or a scary diagnosis, but the idea of letting people in like that is what scares me.

I am tempted wait until we get our NIPT results back, but that won't be till 14 weeks or so.
  • @Snaps816 @lalalorelai  Last pregnancy I waited until 14 weeks (which timed with Christmas), this time I plan to wait until at least after my next appointment, which is at 13 weeks 4 days.  I had a cute reveal idea last time, this time I've got nothing.  I might end up waiting just for that reason!!

I dont know, I kinda see it more as this is where technology is going.  And if your insurance covers new technology, why not take it.  I can't imagine turning it down.  But I agree, I certainly wouldn't seek it out or pay out of pocket unless there were health risks.

I realize this is not really a confession - more of a vent - but I didn't want to start a new thread and also didn't feel right hijacking a different thread.  I'm so frustrated with my doctor's office right now.  This morning I got a phone call telling me that the doctor had reviewed my ultrasound (which was done on Wednesday at 12w4d) and that he could not make out the nasal bone.  The nurse on the phone didn't tell me anything more about what that meant but did go on to oh so helpfully say that I should try not to worry or panic (I don't remember which word she used).  Nothing makes my pregnant self panic more than telling me not to panic.  I asked her how everything else on the ultrasound looked and she said that the neck measurement was fine.  I also asked if my blood work was back.  We opted for the PAPP-A testing because Harmony wasn't covered by our insurance and we are team green.  She said the blood work isn't back yet.  After I got off the phone, I proceeded to do the only other thing that makes my pregnant-self panic - google things.  I found that failure to detect the nasal bone at 12 weeks can be a sign of increased risk of trisomy 21.  They are having me come back for another ultrasound next Thursday (13w,5d).  If that doesn't come back okay, we'll get the Harmony - even if we have to pay.

I realize that there is a chance they just couldn't get a clear picture on Wednesday.  The sonographer said multiple times that the baby wasn't turning the direction she needed to get the right measurements.  She had me cough about 20 times and she kept poking at the baby - but I guess he/she didn't feel like cooperating.  Still, I can't help but wish that the nurse had just said "we couldn't get a clear ultrasound - can you come back next week?"  It is going to be a long week.

I agree with @ThisisNumber3, there's no harm in taking it, regardless of your motivation. It's not like there are a limited number of tests out there and you're taking one away from someone more "in need." And even if your true motivation is to find out the sex, if the test catches something that needs attention, then the test did its job.

I guess there is etiquette that comes into play, though, like with your friend. If you have that covered by insurance, or can afford to pay for that out of pocket and are doing so just to find out the sex, then yeah, it's "not cool" to share that with friends who have that family history and can't afford it/don't have coverage.

To a certain extent I agree with @jamiesc58 about the NIPTs. At least on here, I've seen a lot of women say they're doing the MaterniT21 or the Verifi or whatever and they're so excited to find out the sex. It really glosses over that these are serious tests that could have very life-changing outcomes. I don't think it's a problem of taking a test away from someone who needs it, but people being irresponsible and not thinking through exactly what they're doing. The tests aren't the clearest to interpret without medical guidance (and that's why some doctors recommend only taking them with the guidance of a genetic counselor) and advertising them as a test for the sex of the baby doesn't adequately prepare others for what they may find. I have absolutely no problem with people taking a test for whatever reason, but often posters highlight the sex results and not the other results. Which are, arguably, much more important.

  • @jmw386 Since the ultrasound tech said she wasn't able to get the baby to turn the right way, it was probably just a positioning thing.  Try not to worry.  It can be hard to get a good image when the baby is not cooperating.

When I had my 20 wk scan with my daughter, they couldn't get a good picture of her heart or her mouth, because of her position.  They sent me for a second ultrasound and they were able to get a good picture of her heart (everything was normal), but STILL no picture of her mouth.  Eventually, at a later ultrasound, they were able to get a picture of her mouth and it was fine. :)

  • I'm actually excited to do nothing and cook dinner tonight.  I might even clean a little!
  • I work from home so I can take a shower whenever works best for my work schedule, but I haven't made it there yet, and my husband is out of town - providing me no incentive to look presentable...so, I'm thinking it's not going to happen today.
  • We are telling SO's sisters this weekend. One sister is due 4 days before me and this is first pregnancies for both of us. I worried about it being a competition of sorts when we were close in due dates, but we found out on Tuesday that it's twins and I'll most likely go about a month before... So now I'm worried that it's a competition and I'll steal her thunder... Hopefully it'll all be ok!

  • @kattyleigh costco's jalepeno artichoke dip is the best! They had it on sample with pita chips the other day and I was basically licking the little paper liner. I always want to buy it but I know I can destroy it in a couple of days.

  • I'm totally making a Costco run this weekend for jalapeño artichoke dip. I have been craving jalapeños this pregnancy which is funny because I typically don't care for them much.

    Just keep swimming.
  • I just pretended to be asleep on the couch so DH would take DS outside without me. I feel like a bum but I feel lousy. Plus, it is 33 outside. I think I can skip this one time.

  • Ladies I made a trip to Costco just to look for this dip after you mentioned it! No luck though. Only regular, and roasted pepper artichoke dip.  Is it in the refrigerated or frozen section? Now I NEED it. :)  @justaudrey @kattyleigh

It's in the refrigerated section, on an end cap. By the premise salads. Good luck!

  • @jmw386 that is stressful.  I hope everything turns out ok.
  • I just threw a work baby shower on Friday and I had baby prediction cards (weight, length, day of birth, etc) for people to write down their guesses. I specifically left off the words sex and gender and just had a "Boy or Girl" circle option. I have a coworker who I knew would somehow be judgmental even if I wrote "sex" down or would point out the new appropriate term to use. Honestly I thought even the boy or girl option might offend her in some way, but she ended up calling in sick.
