Hi all,
We are currently TTC #2. DS is 13 months old. It I get pregnant right away, they'll be about 22 months apart. Here's my question: do we move DS into a toddler bed and use his crib for the new baby? That was always the plan but the more I think about it, I'd like to keep him in a crib as long as possible. He's very active, so I feel like once he's in a bed it's going to be very difficult to keep him there. Would it be crazy to buy a 2nd inexpensive crib for the new baby if he's still sleeping well in his crib? This may not even be an issue as it may take a while to get pregnant and/or he may start climbing out sooner than expected. Just wondering what others have done.
Thanks!

DD is 2.5. Her crib we converted to a toddler bed when she was almost 2 years old. She's now sleeping in a Queen bed with a rail on it and her crib is now used for DS who is four months old. There was no need for us to buy a new crib when the one we had was only 2 years old.

I just found out I'm pregnant, so DS will be 2 when our new lo arrives. I'm not sure what we'll do yet since DS sleeps so well in his crib. We will either use the crib for the new baby and buy a bed for DS or get a second inexpensive crib.

However, it really depends on your child. We didn't move our older daughter to a big bed because the new baby was coming. We switched her to using the toddler rail because she was starting to climb out of her crib. Keeping her in her crib would have become more dangerous than moving her over to a "big girl bed." We were successful at then transitioning her to the Queen bed (with rail) before her baby brother came along and we packed up the crib to use for him later when we moved him from sleeping in the Pack n Play bassinet. It worked fine for us and we didn't have the issues that the author seems to feel are inevitable with moving an older child (under the age of three) out of the crib. For one, she says that 2 year olds have no self-control and won't stay in a bed. Two-year-olds are learning some self-control and my daughter does stay in her bed. We've never had an issue of her getting out of her bed at night unless there was something wrong, like a poop diaper after she'd gone to bed. We also have never had her begging us to let her sleep with us at 2am.
If your kid isn't climbing out of the crib and is happily sleeping in it, and if you can afford it, then buying a second crib for the new baby is an option for you.
BTW, I tried to put my daughter in the crib yesterday to sit with her brother and she was having none of that. She likes her big girl bed, especially with her Paw Patrol sheets and pillowcases
Rshapiro86 There is a big difference in a 15 month old (how old your DS should be now, right?) and a 22 month old or 2 year old. Having a new baby was not the reason that we started transitioning DD to a toddler bed and then a Queen bed. It was because she could climb out of the crib. I think that you'll need to see how your DS's sleeping habits evolve over the next months and that will tell you more about when you can start transitioning him out of his crib.
