Question for btdt moms :)

Hi all,

We are currently TTC #2. DS is 13 months old. It I get pregnant right away, they'll be about 22 months apart. Here's my question: do we move DS into a toddler bed and use his crib for the new baby? That was always the plan but the more I think about it, I'd like to keep him in a crib as long as possible. He's very active, so I feel like once he's in a bed it's going to be very difficult to keep him there. Would it be crazy to buy a 2nd inexpensive crib for the new baby if he's still sleeping well in his crib? This may not even be an issue as it may take a while to get pregnant and/or he may start climbing out sooner than expected. Just wondering what others have done.

Thanks!

Re: Question for btdt moms :)

  • Mine were A LOT farther apart and I still decided to keep DD1 in her crib. We got a $60 crib from IKEA (we LOVE it!!!) and both kids are happy.

  • @harmonicbabe26  that's what I was thinking of doing also. I know people rave about the Ikea cribs! We'll see when I actually get pregnant, but was just curious what others have done.
  • My son is 2 y 10 m and we just moved him to a twin. Expecting his baby brother in about three months. I kept him in a crib as long as possible but honestly once I got pregnant I got tired of lifting him in and out. He's so big! And when he was having some trouble sleeping in his toddler bed (not because of the toddler bed) it was a pain to have to sit on the floor because his bed wasn't big enough for me to just sit/lie in it with him. So moving him to a twin just seemed to make sense.

If your kids are only 2 years apart, that's unnecessary. If your crib is 10 or 20 years old, then yeah, a new crib would be necessary.

DD is 2.5. Her crib we converted to a toddler bed when she was almost 2 years old. She's now sleeping in a Queen bed with a rail on it and her crib is now used for DS who is four months old. There was no need for us to buy a new crib when the one we had was only 2 years old.

Yes our crib was new when we got it, so it still has a lot of life left in it. Just curious how your DD did when you transitioned her to a toddler bed? I'm so nervous about that transition.

I just found out I'm pregnant, so DS will be 2 when our new lo arrives. I'm not sure what we'll do yet since DS sleeps so well in his crib. We will either use the crib for the new baby and buy a bed for DS or get a second inexpensive crib.

She did really well with going to the toddler rail on her crib. We let her help Daddy put it together. We didn't change her bedtime routine at all, except that she now no longer had a fourth rail on her bed.

Thanks for the info. I think we're planning to hold off on making a decision for as long as possible to see if DS starts climbing out. I would love to keep him in his crib as long as he'll stay in there. I guess time will tell.

However, it really depends on your child. We didn't move our older daughter to a big bed because the new baby was coming. We switched her to using the toddler rail because she was starting to climb out of her crib. Keeping her in her crib would have become more dangerous than moving her over to a "big girl bed." We were successful at then transitioning her to the Queen bed (with rail) before her baby brother came along and we packed up the crib to use for him later when we moved him from sleeping in the Pack n Play bassinet. It worked fine for us and we didn't have the issues that the author seems to feel are inevitable with moving an older child (under the age of three) out of the crib. For one, she says that 2 year olds have no self-control and won't stay in a bed. Two-year-olds are learning some self-control and my daughter does stay in her bed. We've never had an issue of her getting out of her bed at night unless there was something wrong, like a poop diaper after she'd gone to bed. We also have never had her begging us to let her sleep with us at 2am.

If your kid isn't climbing out of the crib and is happily sleeping in it, and if you can afford it, then buying a second crib for the new baby is an option for you.

BTW, I tried to put my daughter in the crib yesterday to sit with her brother and she was having none of that. She likes her big girl bed, especially with her Paw Patrol sheets and pillowcases ;) We have the bed pushed up against the wall with a huge stuffed dog and some throw pillows on that side, and the bed rail with her little stuffed animals against it on the other side. It makes the sleep space about the same as she had in her toddler bed, which I think helps her, as well.

Rshapiro86 There is a big difference in a 15 month old (how old your DS should be now, right?) and a 22 month old or 2 year old. Having a new baby was not the reason that we started transitioning DD to a toddler bed and then a Queen bed. It was because she could climb out of the crib. I think that you'll need to see how your DS's sleeping habits evolve over the next months and that will tell you more about when you can start transitioning him out of his crib.

Thanks for the advice! Yes our DS is 15 months right now. We were talking the other night and decided to do exactly as you suggested and see how his sleeping patterns evolve over the coming months. A lot can change in 8 months!

@Rshapiro86 Definitely! I wanted to keep DD in her crib as long as I could, but when she started climbing out, we couldn't do that. She did surprisingly well with the transition. I hope that you can keep your DS in his crib as long as you can, since that containment is pretty nice ;) But if he starts climbing out, or if you think that he would like to be in a "big boy bed" you can try to transition then. Character sheets help out a lot with that. We didn't have a lot of options with her going to a Queen bed, but I was able to find the Paw Patrol sheets in a Full size. We used a different fitted sheet and then put the flat sheet on her bed along with the pillowcases that came with it. She doesn't sleep under the sheets, but under her blanket.
