Babymoon Packing list!

Heading to Hawaii next week for our "babymoon"! Got some long flights and car rides ahead of me.

What have you packed on your babymoon (or just travel in general while PG) that helped your comfort?

Re: Babymoon Packing list!

  • As per doc's orders, I ordered some compression pantyhose for the flights. Trying to figure out if I'll want to bring a pillow...
  • Loading the player...
  • Comfy shoes--my feet swell so bad when I fly pregnant. You'll probably be glad you did bring a pillow, if you have room. Otherwise my docs advice is to just drink tons of water and walk around as much as possible. Have a fantastic trip!! All kinds of jealously happening over here :).

I second comfy shoes - my very last trip NYC-LA last pregnancy I wore cute ballet flats and was fine, but about 2 hours after I landed it looked like my foot was exploding out of the shoe. I had to buy shoes to fly home and they were not my style but I was so happy I didn't have to stuff my swollen foot into cute shoes. Definitely plan on wearing flip flops at the airport! And maybe bring some unisom for the time change.

Eta: where in Hawaii are you going, if you don't mind sharing? DH has never been but growing up my family went to Maui a lot, I love it and can't wait to take my kids.
  • I went to Hawaii in December for a delayed honeymoon that I suppose doubled as a babymoon.
What island are you going to?
I went to a maternity clothes shop and found a couple cute summer outfits on the sale rack that I ended up wearing practically the whole time. My favorites were these cotton white pregnancy pants and this red spaghetti strap flow-ey top. I wore that to dinner a bunch of times. I bought a couple dresses, too. Honestly, you don't need to pack THAT much for Hawaii as you're in your swimsuit half the time! We did some hiking which was kind of a problem as I didn't have pregnancy hiking pants. So I brought my belly band (I think that's what it's called) and used that when we hiked, which worked pretty well. Also, bring your bikini. I brought a couple one-pieces, but I ended up feeling totally comfortable rocking the bikini the whole time. And good books! I read The Paris Apartment and the Aviator's Wife while I was there. Oh, yeah, and good lingerie. As for shoes, I wore flip flops and these cute white flat sandals I had.
    Have fun!!!!

  • Thanks for all the suggestions! I think I may wear my hiking shoes on the flights since they are really comfortable (and take up a lot of room when you pack them, so might as well wear them to free up some space). I just tried on my swimsuits and fortunately they still fit (yay for choosing high-waisted bottoms a while back!), and most of my summer stuff is flowy/roomy enough that I didn't need to hunt down any summery maternity clothes (which is a challenge in the winter as everything in the stores right now is dark and long-sleeved). I think I'll just end up taking my regular travel neck pillow, which can actually be "formed" into a cylinder or other shapes because it's filled will beads and malleable.

Definitely a challenge right now is finding something to hike (or waddle outdoors) in because I'm fairly certain that even with a belly band, my hiking pants will be uncomfortable! Maybe leggings/yoga pants will be ok?

We're going to Big Island (volcano-birding-time) for about 8 days and then Maui (beach-time) for 6. We've never been and we knew Hawaii was a place that we needed to go before the baby comes because who knows if we'll ever get the chance again! We've been trying to do it on a budget: flights and cars booked with frequent flyer miles, staying with friends for a few days, etc. ...but our time on Maui will be spent at a proper hotel-almost-resort on the beach for plenty of relaxing

Good idea! I have some cheapo lightweight flip flops I can carry on with me and change into if necessary.

I second compression leggings/socks/something, comfortable shoes, and a refillable water bottle (you can fill it after going through security and stay hydrated on the trip). In addition, you may want to bring saline spray to to flush out your sinuses after being on a plane-- both for the moisture and for the anti-germ effects. More underwear than you normally would pack for a trip may be necessary if you're part of the snissing and/or extra sweating club.
  • I didn't go anywhere nearly as exciting as Hawaii, but when I traveled over the holidays I brought some approved meds for common problems with me, just in case. I didnt know what would be easily available and didn't want to be hunting if I was having issues. I also made sure to bring tons of comfy stuff to wear! Otherwise I think you'll be happy as a clam just to be in Hawaii :)

We are birders, too! We saw some good ones. In Maui: Eat at Kimo's and the Lahaina Grill in Lahaini. Amazing food!  Best activity was snorkeling Molokini crater.  Fantastic!

  • Just got back from Asia. It was about 25 hours of flying time. Definitely echo the walk around thing. Everything from the knee down swelled to double its size. So uncomfortable. I'd pack snacks. Airplane food was so disgusting. And drink a crazy amount of water. Just enjoy yourself and don't feel bad if you need to take more breaks than normal. Have fun!

  • I'm on my baby moon now - last day in cancun! Here's my advice:

    1) whatever allergy/decongestant you are approved to take. I had my allergies start bothering me the day before our flight and thought I would power through it. My ear didn't pop for a day and I blew my nose non stop for 2 days. The only meds I could buy at my resort were aspirin based, which leads me to #2...
    2) your approved meds list. If something does happen, you don't want to rely on Google and your memory for what you can and can't take.
    3) a good swimsuit cover up! I have lived in mine for 4 days and my bump looks super cute in it.
    4) a sun hat. I ended up buying one at the resort but it doesn't fit super well and it blew off several times. Great for scalp shade though!
    5) shoes you know you can wear a lot. I bought a new pair of beach flip flops for the trip and they have me blisters the very first night. Luckily I brought a spare pair.
    6) your libido. Just my 2 cents.

Have a great time in Hawaii!
  • We're leaving this weekend on a trip to Italy and the 1st day is 24+ hours traveling, so my travel packing list is going to be:
a travel pillow (buying this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009416CVC?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=ox_sc_act_title_1&smid=A29A4HN8M4JJ6B
    a pair of compression socks
    A LOT of non-salty snacks
    water bottle
    books/ipod/kindle/nintendo ds/sewing
good pairs of shoes (thinking about bringing my gym shoes too, so I have another comfy pair to wear..)
2 boxes of children's tylenol (can't swallow pills) & cold/flu medicine & allergy medicine just in case
    vitamins+fiber gummies
local "in network" doctor info in case I have a non-emergency issue
    antibacterial gel
    back up electronics charger
my husband is bringing his netbook (watch movies)
    fancy camera
Have a great time in Hawaii!!

  • I don't know about you, but I cannot sleep without my Snoogle. I'd be bringing it no matter where we are going, which fortunately for me does not include a plane ride...

  • So we're on our babymoon now, and my packing list was for nothing. .. Delta Airlines lost both me & my husband's luggage. It's been 5 days already. We only had the clothes we were wearing (trying to keep our carry ons light) and it's nearly impossible to find bigger maternity clothes here. If we don't get our luggage, then I'll be missing half of my maternity clothes. I had packed both my prescription glasses and sunglasses in my checked bag too. Now i got sick with a cold (i actually had packed cold medicine in my checked bag in case i got sick) and finding cold medicine i can take while pregnant in italian had been very difficult. Otherwise we've had lots of fun. Hope everyone else's babymoon is going well!

  • Oh no @Sienna516 we are on a little babymoon now and the weather is much cooler than anticipated so I bought some warmer clothes in a size or two up from the resort shop. Maybe try to find some European chains and do that? Zara, h&m? Good luck!
  • Just got back a few days ago, and here are my impressions:
    - If you're going to Hawaii and are all jazzed up to be eating fresh fish all the time (which was me), make sure you check mercury content. Everything there was ahi (tuna; high mercury) and mahi (moderate mercury). Not sure if it's seasonal or not but that's what most of the "catch of the days" were. I ate a lot of shrimp and found a Hawaiian-based mercury guide online that included fish that we on the mainland may not come across as often, like ono and monchong.
    - I spent a decent amount of time packing for this trip making sure I had everything I needed. My suitcase was stuffed, but it was worth it!
    - Got full-length compression stockings that weren't crazy comfortable, but after 11-hour and 8.5-hour flights, I had no issues with swelling, so I guess they worked! I didn't wear them on a quick inter-island 45-minute flight and was fine though, too.
    - The suggestion for bringing snacks really helped on the way out for the 11 hour flight. In coach you have to pay for all food out to Hawaii.
    - I brought a canteen to fill so that I can drink a lot of water on the flights. I got a lot of crap from an unsympathetic United flight attendant that didn't want to top off my canteen because "there might not be enough water on this flight for me to do that". She ended up relenting, but I am holding back a United customer service rant right now.
    - I was at weeks 25 and 26 while on my babymoon, and if I could have made it work, I would have gone earlier (like 16-20 weeks), when I felt less big/heavy and had a higher libido. We could only go when we went due to work schedules, and it was fine, but I did end up skipping out on a few short hikes and other activities that involved steep inclines because I didn't want to haul myself up them.
    - Regarding hiking: my fiance surprised me with some hiking poles right before we left for our trip which was awesome! Made it so much easier to pull myself out of a volcanic crater :) I highly recommend them if you plan on being active and hiking with inclines. For some reason (center of gravity?) I feel so much heavier in my belly and easily winded when I am going uphill/upstairs.
    - If you plan on snorkeling, bring Tums! Heartburn was a constant.

We had an AMAZING time, even though it seems like I'm outlining mostly negative stuff. I just wanted to pass along my experiences that might be helpful to others. I was definitely a trip of a lifetime and would go back in a second! Saw some great birds, too B)
