Unchanged Fundal Height...

Hi all.
I'm 35 weeks today. A few weeks ago at my M/W appointment, my Fundal Height measurement was 30cm which put baby in the 10th centile. I was sent for a growth scan and all was fine, baby was estimated at just under 5 pound which the sonographer said was good.
Been to theM/W today and my Fundal is still only 30cm! No growth at all. So got another scan tomorrow. Baby is still moving about and the heartbeat was good, I'm just a strange mix of confused and worried. It's my first baby, husbands 3rd (he's divorced and has 2 from his previous marriage), but both bus other kids were plain sailing so to speak.
Just wondering what to expect! If growth has stopped will I just be monitored, or will I have to have baby early?
Anyone had similar?
Thanks ladies xx

Re: Unchanged Fundal Height...

  • Odds are very good that the baby's growth has not stopped and everything is just fine.  Measuring fundal height is definitely not an exact determination of baby's growth. Some Drs don't even do it any more. I'm sure the scan tomorrow will ease your mind.  My fundal height only went from 30-31 in the last month (I'm almost 35 weeks) but yesterday the baby was growing great at my ultrasound.
Also your baby may have dropped, which can cause your belly to measure smaller.

  • Absolutely all those thing pp said.... and can I just say I think measuring Fundal height is a waste of time?!
It can change even in a few minutes based on baby's position... your bladder... if you are laying flat or inclined... ftm vs stm etc... and by who  measures .... and scares poor mama's to death
Good luck! Your baby is no doubt perfect
  • My doctor still does fundal height and every single time he comments that he doesn't know why he does it, it's outdated and just a habit at this point
  • I'm surprised my Baby Friendly hospital still does them at every visit. I just think it's silly and leads to many worried parents. And I would go as far as to venture a guess that without the measurement, we'd have less unneeded interventions and better birth outcomes.

  • Yep, my Dr doesn't do them anymore. They were way way way off with my first pregnancy and baby was of normal size. I wouldn't be worried.

  • My doctor doesnt do them either. She says it's to hard to measure and the results were very inaccurate.
