I'm an April 2016 mom, but thought I'd share this with you gals, too, since it's got such a great response on our April board.
I don't know why I didn't think of posting this sooner, but I wanted to make you ladies aware of a resource you may not know about. Search Google for a "Diagnostic Medical Sonography" or "Ultrasound" program in your area. I work for the Technical College System of GA and we have several awesome schools with this program. I visited one a few weeks ago and had an awesome experience. I stayed in there almost an hour and a half with the student trying to get the best pictures possible for both of our benefits. You have to be between 18 and 32 weeks for most programs and you will probably have to get your OB to sign a release saying you are having a normal pregnancy.
As for what happens, I've done this now with 2 babies at 2 different schools and the process was very much the same. The first part of the ultrasound is like your typical anatomy scan at the OB's office. The student will identify and measure several things and probably save and label the pictures for their school portfolio and will save some for you as well. Then, he/she will attempt a 3D ultrasound. Remember, the student is still learning about using the machine and using its functions to tweak the pictures and get you the best possible shot. With my son, I ended up having both teachers (who are in the lab, but not watching over the student's shoulder) come in at some point. One helped her get the best view to label the 4 chambers of the heart and the other came in to help her tweak, tilt, and render the 3D view.
This isn't just an ad for Technical Schools, I'm a mom and I've taken advantage of an awesome service for FREE! All those guys and gals in your OB's office had to learn somewhere and they need real life "guinea pigs" to practice on. Our cosmetology, collision repair, and dental hygiene programs are right up there, too!
