Nervous about baby flipping onto stomach

Hurray the LO started flipping over onto her stomach today! While I cherish the milestone, I am worried. I found her in her crib on her tummy crying. See, she still doesn't know how to go back to her back. This is going to be her first night after successfully turning. I'm afraid of what could happen at night.

Has anyone gone through this?

  • Following this as well as this scared me too!

  • If your baby can flip then she's strong enough to stay on her stomach if she wants to.  Just keep soft stuff out of the crib.  Do you think she was crying because she was stuck in a position she didn't like?  Or just because it was time to sleep?  Did she stop crying if you flipped her back over?
  • The first night after DD learned how to go back to belly really well was hard because she kept doing it and waking herself up.  She also can't go belly to back yet.  Now it's not a problem.  She's taken one nap on her belly so far.  At this age, they are old enough to lift their heads so there's really no concern with them sleeping on their belly if they do it on their own.  It's just been frustrating for us because she can't get back over and she gets mad.  She's been doing it for about a month now.  I can't wait until she can turn over to her back on her own.
  • My LO started rolling from back to tummy last Friday and also doesn't know how to turn back. He rolled in his sleep a couple of times already (he was swaddled, we are now urgently transitioning him out of it), but I'm not sure if he woke because of the strange position or just because (4 month sleep regression going strong :( ). When we can free both arms from the swaddle in a couple of days, we'll see if he likes it more on the belly.

Agreed. I read this in an article today so don't worry.
  • We are going through the same thing...just transitioned baby out of rock and play into pack and play today. Both naps she ended up rolling to her belly a few times and cried, one time she freaked out and screamed. I grabbed her quickly and she was red and upset :(

Back in the rock and play tonight.... I was too traumatized to keep her in the pack and play tonight. We'll keep doing it for naps for now and see how it goes....
  • My daughter sleeps on her tummy every night and I have had zero issues with her. I wouldn't be worried about it. Just make sure that there is nothing around your baby's face.
