High blood pressure concerns

Yesterday I had my 35 week appointment. My blood pressure was extremely high so they sent me to L&D for a stress test on the baby and to monitor my pressure. It started to go down and baby was fine but I have to go back Saturday to be checked again and I've been put on bed rest. For anyone who's been put on bed rest before: what are my options? Can I still prepare the baby's things and clean the house? They didn't really specify as to what I can do

Re: High blood pressure concerns

  • Bed rest means you're in bed.  No housework.  No meal prep.  Definitely no nursery prep unless you can do it from bed.  Bathroom trips only.  Maybe shower.

  • I have been on modified bedrest since 18 weeks.  It was very bathroom and light meals only.  Now that I'm 34 weeks, Im mostly cleared for house work, cooking and running some errands.  My bed rest is due to a short cervix, however.  At this point they figure if labor starts we should be good to go as I already had steroid injections so her lungs should be pretty sturdy.  Bed rest for high blood pressure may be more critical for baby and you.  Maybe send a quick email or phone call asking for clarification on exactly how still they want you to be?
  • Bed rest for bp issues means.... bed rest. Not doing anything. Boo
  • When I had high Bp my bedrest was on my left side as much as possible except for trips to the bathroom or getting food (no large meal preparation either). Definitely I was told no house work errands etc. but all doctors are different so you may want to give yours a call.

I had this exact thing around 30 weeks with both of my previous pregnancies.. My first was pretty easy, I could lay around and not really worry but I'm not sure what they expect you to do on "bed rest" while you have a 2 year old.. Haha. Seriously?
If you have an electronic BP machine, you could do some light stuff and check it every 20 minutes or so.
  • I had the same thing happened to me when I was 36 weeks and DD came 10 days ahead of schedule. By the time I started having contractions, I was diagnosed with early stage of preclampsia and my BP really didn't go down until almost a day after DD was born.
Yes bed rest means you shouldn't be cleaning the house.  It's your perfect excuse to lay down and get some rest before the baby comes!!! OB also asked me to check my BP at least 3 times a day and emailed her the readings.
  • I went on home bed rest with DS1 at 36 weeks and then hospital bed rest at 37 weeks. Sorry but bed rest means only getting out of bed to shower and go the bathroom. I feel terrible for women who are on it their whole pregnancy. What you are talking about sounds like light activity or restricted activity.

  • Your OB should have told you more specifically. I'd call and ask.
