Preemies

Preemie Sleep Patterns

Since Ruby was a preemie, I've always been more concerned about her eating habits than her sleeping habits, although having reflux sure affected both for a long time!

Ruby is a great napper, she generally takes 2 hour and half naps during the day, and sometimes a short half one in the early evening. She has finally gotten to the point where she is sleeping through the night technically. She usually goes down at 7 pm and wakes at 4am to eat. Most of the time she'll go back to sleep until 6:30 or 7am. But sometimes she just keeps waking up until I wake up to. I won't complain too much, but waking up at 4am sucks when she won't sleep after that!

So I was just curious, how is your preemie sleeping? How long do they nap? How long do they sleep at night?

Re: Preemie Sleep Patterns

  • E didn't sleep well until she was 8 months old... we tried EVERYTHING and I think it was just a maturity thing. She goes down around 6:30-7 and wakes at 4ish to eat and then goes back down until 7-8:30 (we let her decide when she wakes up). She generally sleeps for close to 3 hours during the day... her morning nap is a little over 2 hours and her after noon nap is 30-45 minutes :)

  • i read healthy sleep habits happy child and it had all the info in there about what to expect in sleeping habits. if im correct it said to go by their adjusted age. i remember it saying that the night waking should be cut out by nine months if that makes you feel any better? R was sleeping through the night by 5 1/2 months real age. but feeding him at night wasn't an issue for him gaining weight.

  • DS didn't fall into a regular sleep pattern until he was 6ish months actual. Since then, he is 9 months now (I really should put up a ticker), he has been sleeping 7pm-7:30am & napping at 9, 12:30 & 3:30, give or take 30 minutes. His naps are not very long though. They range from 30 min to 1 hr 30 (on a very good day).

  • Max takes 2 naps during the day; about 1-1.5 hours each. One at 9:30 and one at 12:30.

He goes down to bed at about 8:30, and we wake him up at 6:30 to get ready for the day.

  • Just a note, I'm not really concerned, I feel pretty lucky. I've none done anything to make her sleep longer or more, I've always let her take the lead. I do however have problems with insomnia, I always have. So I'm used to dealing with sleep challenges!
  • Robbie sleeps great at night. I think if he could figure out how to eat, he'd been STTN. Now evne if he will sleep longer, I get him up to eat because sometimes that's the only way to get food into him.

He typically goes to bed around 11pm, gets up anywhere from 9a-11am (Getting up to eat at least twice usually three times in that range)

He is usually only up for an hour.. maybe 2 before morning nap, which is usually 45m-1h.

During the day a lot of times he'll catnap here and there.. 10 minutes here, 15 there..

Then he takes an evening nap anywhere from 6-8 and lately has been sleeping more like 2 hours.

his night time sleeping has been pretty regular (with the occasional blip, of course) for some time. But the napping.. it's not so good. He'll almost never fall asleep anywhere but on me, and if I try to put him down he wakes right up.
