Zofran?

What are your thoughts/experiences with taking Zofran for morning sickness? I had zero nausea with my first LO and Ive been crazy nauseas for weeks now with this pregnancy. I took a Zofran pill that was prescribed to my son when he was having a stomach issue a couple of months ago and POOF the nausea was gone.  I called my OB to ask if a nurse could call me back because I had some questions about it and they called back and said a prescription was sent to my pharmacy  :o But now Im worried to take more because of all the case studies that say it could lead to increase birth defects (heart defects and cleft palate) but nothing super concrete about "No don't take it!"  or "yes, its totally fine"  Help please...

Re: Zofran?

  • I took it with my son because my morning sickness was SO bad. I didn't take it every day, only when it was really bad. I would try other things first; sea bands, jolly ranchers or crackers and if it was still unbearable then I would take it. My son is perfectly healthy and no side effects

  • I know lots of people who have taken it and I no issue. I took it a few weeks ago when I had a stomach flu and was told it was safe with baby. However, most people only take it if they're really ill. Like constant vomiting and dropping weight because of the risks. But its ultimatley up to you and your OB.

  • I started zofran around 12 weeks with my DD, so not during the first trimester. It got rid of the nausea, but made me really constipated, and I think it prolonged my nausea over all. I am trying my hardest not to take any this time around. I am so miserable.

Also, @CoffeeBeanFiend91 I recognize you from June '13!

  • I took it with DD2 before the risks of heart defects and cleft palates were known. I was so upset when that news came out because it was a life saver. I will try to go without this time around. I'm trying diclegis first, but then if I'm puking 4 times a day like I was with last pregnancies, I will probably go for it. Hoping it doesn't come to that, and if it does, I'm hoping to wait as long as possible so this LO's heart is more developed. Also I'm always surprised when people say it helps with nausea because, for me, it helped me not throw up but I still felt quite nauseated. Ugh!

  • Thanks ladies, i think I am going to hold onto it for emergencies and try not taking it till after 12 weeks.  Which seems so. far. away. The sea bands and vitamin b6 seem to be helping enough, I can suffer through a little longer!

  • can you ask for diclegis? Maybe that will help get you to 12 weeks.

  • Yeah, I think I will do that, I have an appt next week so I can talk my OB about both options. I don't know how I got so lucky the first time with no nausea...  :s

  • My doctor told me he wouldn't prescribe it to me unless I felt like I had to be hospitalized. So I just keep telling myself "do you need to go to the hospital?" As soon as I think I might I will call him up ASAP!
  • @TheTamedShrew sorry just now getting on a computer and seeing the notificiation. Hey gurl hey! I thought all the June 13 ladies abandoned thebump after the meltdown.

  • Phenergan (promethazine) is my first pick for pregnant women with nausea. It has been used for many years and has had no negative data. It does cause sedation though if the dose is too high. Constipation is common with all nausea drugs cause they are anti cholinergic. Drinking lots of water helps.

In saying this though, there are a lot of meds that docs have used for many years that we are finding out may not be as safe as once thought (zofran, Tylenol) but the data is definitely not conclusive yet so taking it may be ok if nothing else works.

  • I take zofran and just make sure I don't take it daily - all the studies I have read and DH read show that women whose children had birth defects took zofran regularly sometimes multiple times per day. Almost all drugs are pregnancy category C and should be used with caution anyway, but I trust the research DH did because he has access to all number of recent medical journals through his hospital and surgical program. He says it's safe for me to take because the actual risk is incredibly low based on my usage of it. I use it about 2-3 days a week.

  • I was given Zofran despite my protests and took it for a week and a half.  The "advice nurse" at my dr's office said all the case studies and law suits were really not all they were cracked up to be and it was a bunch of "ambulance chasing" lawyers trying to get some $$.  Well, the Zofran almost made the MS worse.  So I called the dr and asked for something else.  They called in the Pnegran which has been awesome, but I will agree with a PP that stuff is no joke depending on the dosage.  it will flat knock you out.  I took a whole dose as directed on the bottle and It was around dinner time.  I was barely able to get out of the bed for the night and I knew it was from the meds.  We thankfully had my apt with dr. later that week? and he gave me some samples of Dicglesis but I've been afraid to swap it out yet because it appears the Dicglesis has to "build up" in your system.  You start with one pill and if its not enough, you take 2 at the next dosing which is like 24 hours later or something.  And, I'm afraid it too will make me pass out.  So we are going to try that one this weekend when I'm home.

    Good Luck!

  • I got some Diclergis and yes it knocks me out! I only took one the first night, it says to take at bedtime on an empty stomach, and the next day I was a zombie for at least 4 hours after waking up.  I continued to take it and the zombie affects have subsided a little but I'm still barfing in the am.  Prob bc of the empty stomach. I do feel better post barf unitl around 6ish though, so thats nice :)

  • I took Zofran with my son, who is now 6, because I was vomiting 3-4/day starting at 6 weeks. I wasn't losing tons of weight, but I was miserable and it was a fairly widely accepted drug at the time. I'm 9.5 weeks with my current pregnancy, and my OB just started me on Zofran again. I thought I had it bad with DS, but this time around is SO much worse. I've only been vomiting about once/day but the dry-heaving has been constant; completely incapacitated and unable to work and take care of my family. I'm much more cautious of the Zofran this time around, so I'm limiting myself to one dose a day in the late morning, and then using B6 3x/day and unisom before bed. The B6+unisom usually gets me through the early part of the morning. I suffer for a few hours, then take the Zofran; same again after dinner - suffer for a few hours until I take the Unisom. I've had a couple of days where it just didn't work, and I needed a second dose, but that's only happening once a week or so. My OB's opinion was that if I can take care of myself, I needed to consider the Zofran. So, that's where I'm at. Good luck with whatever you decide!
  • I took zofran multiple times a day with DD2 and she's fine. I just got the zofran script filled yesterday. I'm puking multiple times a day and I am having a hard time functioning at work. I tried diclegis but it was far too sedating for me even just taking the minimum. Plus I still puked with it. I am trying to hold off of the zofran but I am probably only hours away from caving.

I make myself feel better by justififying that my baby is at higher risk for neural tube defects without zofran because I can't keep down a prenatal vitamin or basically any source of folic acid.

  • I took it with my first. Couldn't get out of bed was SO sick until Dr. gave me Zofran... it was a game changer! I've always been anti-drugs, etc so I had a  hard time justifying it... but I had already lost 15 lbs (more than 10% of my bodyweight!) and knew I needed something to help me feel better. I took 1/2 a pill, once every day until MS wore off around week 18... and it worked within 20 minutes BOOM I could function again.  Haven't had ANY MS this time around (yay!) but would not hesitate to take it again. My child is healthy with no known/visible side effects. I am a huge fan of Zofran!

  • I took zofran with DS and he is happy and healthy. I spoke with a few of the doctors I work with and their position is that there is insufficient evidence to truly establish a link between birth defects and zofran.

  • I took Zofran when I was pregnant with DD, as well. No issues. But as a PP mentioned, it didn't seem to relieve the nausea so much as make me feel less like I was going to throw up. I still felt pretty queasy nonstop. This time around, my nausea is seemingly a bit better. I can't really remember when the bad queasiness started with DD, though, so maybe it's still too early to tell at 7 1/2 weeks.
